🌱 🫘 In Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya, a significant transformation is taking place as farmers adopt Nyota beans, a biofortified variety rich in iron. This initiative, part of the “Integration of Biofortified Crops in School Feeding Programs” project funded by The Rockefeller Foundation and supported by HarvestPlus, is enhancing awareness, seed accessibility, and production knowledge. 🧑🏽🌾 A notable success story is Nathan Chejor, a local farmer who cultivated 2.5 acres of Nyota beans in 2024. Thanks to accessible local seed supplies, Nathan avoided a long trip to procure seeds, highlighting the impact of localized support in agricultural innovation. As we strive to build resilient food systems in Africa, food safety and good agriculture practice (GAP) are crucial components that cannot be overlooked. In Uganda, agriculture employs over 70% of the population, and accounts for 25% of the country's GDP." (Source: World Bank), and also agriculture is the backbone of the economy, ensuring the safety and quality of our food is paramount. Good agriculture practice is essential for: - Producing safe and nutritious food - Protecting the environment and biodiversity - Supporting local communities and fair labor practices - Enhancing market access and competitiveness - Mitigating climate change In Uganda, initiatives like the National Agriculture Policy and the Uganda National Farmers Federation are promoting GAP and food safety. However, more needs to be done to: - Strengthen regulations and enforcement - Support farmer training and extension services - Enhance market access and fair prices for farmers - Promote sustainable consumption and production - Encourage private sector investment and partnerships Let's work together to design a food system that prioritizes safety, sustainability, and equity for all. #FoodSystem #FoodSafety #GoodAgriculturePractice #Uganda #Africa #Agroecology #Sustainability"

Plant innovation is not just important—𝑖𝑡’𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 to securing Africa's food future. As we face climate change, population growth, and evolving dietary needs, the development of new plant varieties is critical. These innovations help farmers tackle droughts, pests, and nutrient depletion, enabling crops to thrive where traditional varieties would fail. Without continuous investment in breeding new plant varieties, Africa's agricultural productivity would stagnate, leaving millions vulnerable to hunger and economic instability. The diversity of plant innovations provides the foundation for resilient food systems that can withstand the challenges of tomorrow. Let’s push forward with plant innovation—because it’s the key to feeding not just Africa, but the world. 🌱🚀 #PlantInnovation #SustainableAgriculture #AgriResearch #ResilientFoodSystems #FeedingAfrica #FoodSecurity #AgricultureTransformation #FutureOfFarming #ClimateResilience #BiodiversityInAgriculture

Medium and large-scale agribusinesses are playing an increasingly important role in Africa’s agro-food system, with new value chain investments that are capturing opportunities for growth over the past 10-15 years. These new investments have been triggered by a combination of factors (such as food price crises and policy incentives) and driven by growing local, regional and international food demand (underpinned by rising incomes, urbanization, and changing diets) - Africa Agriculture Status Report 2024 #FoodSystems #AFSForum24
