As part of my commitment to bring more value to our app vendors we visited the Street Food Business Expo yesterday to hear from some industry giants, and wow, I’m so pleased we did! I’ll be sharing the key insights to our vendors and mailing list soon but I wanted to share a little here too as there are some transferable takeaways and it’s important to me to give a voice to the street food industry beyond those who are actually in it. Facilitated by Richard Johnson of the British Street Food Awards, the panel shared some interesting points: - People eat with their eyes: having good content online is now a non-negotiable for food businesses (perhaps any business for that matter) and if you’re not on social media you’ll struggle. - The place where you decide to trade matters. For food trucks, no two councils are made the same - some are supportive of the extra footfall, but others less so and it can often be the difference between success and failure. - The numbers of street food vendors are increasing and it’s getting competitive. To make matters worse, even big brand names like Nando’s brought out a food truck for certain events making it harder than ever for the traditionally smaller businesses. Standing out and having a personal brand DOES make a difference, even for food! My mission is clearer than ever and I know I’ve got my work cut out for the foreseeable to make street food more accessible, but I’m giving it my best and I hope you join me on the journey! #streetfood #hospitality #ncass #britishstreetfood The Nationwide Caterers Association (NCASS)

Well done to CUPP for targeting the lunch FTG mission here with a £10 meal deal 🫧🍣 Pairing their famous boba tea with #healthier food options highlights the diverse range offer and increases basket size. I wonder why the likes of Pret A Manger and Starbucks do not push such promotions in their trade marketing? It's an easy way to: - give customers new ideas - offer value for money messages - bring ranges together across categories - include brands like Little Moons here This is a fundamental part of Greggs success. Understanding and catering to different customer missions is a must. CUPP now have over 30 locations across the UK and seem to be very popular wherever I see them. CUPP have got this pretty much spot on in my opinion. I was reading a case study about a gourmet food company who started a members-only club with free shipping, early access to new items, and exclusive discounts for those who pay an annual subscription. Because of the exclusivity, there was a sense of community among the customers, which encouraged loyalty and increased yearly spending. Increasing average check size or upselling!! One effective method is to create a sign at the cash register stating that ''if we don't ask you about our rewards program, we will give you a free cookie''. This tactic forces compliance and encourages employees, including the owner, to actively engage in upselling. The same approach can be applied in full-service restaurants by including a similar message in the menu to prompt servers to ask about dessert offerings.
