Snow place like home. This Snowy Owl is enjoying a perfect perch with Toronto's CN Tower in the background, a reminder that some of our favourite birds have to navigate the hidden dangers in urban landscapes, including untreated glass. While this bird is safe, not every bird is so lucky. Windows can be a real ‘pane’ for our feathered friends, with billions lost to glass collisions each year. Keep their flights safe and their perches plentiful with Feather Friendly markers! Swarming is a natural process in the life of a honey bee colony. A swarm is mobile because the bees are looking for a new location where they can make a honeycomb and establish a new colony. When honey bees swarm, it is common for them to swarm onto bushes and trees. If a honeybee swarm is left and not collected quickly it could colonise chimneys, roofs or walls. If honey bee swarms move into structures such as walls or chimneys, they will need to be removed for health and safety reasons. Building a pigeon coop in a tree can provide a unique and safe environment for your birds. Here’s a detailed guide on how to construct a tree-mounted pigeon coop: But Wood: Sturdy and weather-resistant wood for the structure. **About Wire Mesh: For walls and flooring to protect against predators. Roofing Material: Such as corrugated metal or shingles. **The Step-by-Step Construction: 1. Selecting the Tree: Choose a healthy, strong tree with branches suitable for supporting the coop's weight. Oaks and maples are often good choices. 2. Designing the Coop: Sketch out a design that fits the tree and your pigeons' needs. Consider dimensions, ventilation, and ease of access. 3. Preparing the Tree: Trim any branches that might interfere with the coop's placement or stability. Ensure the tree is sound and can support the weight. 4. Building the Platform: Construct a sturdy wooden platform as the base of the coop. Use treated wood to resist rotting. 5. Assembling the Coop Structure: Build the coop walls and roof on the platform. Use wire mesh for walls to allow ventilation while keeping predators out. 6. Installing the Coop: Securely attach the coop to the tree using bolts, brackets, or straps. Ensure it’s stable and doesn’t sway excessively. 7. Adding Perches and Nesting Boxes: Inside the coop, install perches and nesting boxes. Pigeons need comfortable spaces to roost and lay eggs. 8. Providing Access: Install a ladder or steps leading up to the coop platform for easy access during cleaning and maintenance. 9. Securing the Coop: Ensure all edges are secure to prevent predators from entering. Use predator-proof latches on doors and entrances. 10. Weatherproofing: Apply weatherproofing to the roof and any exposed wood to protect against rain and sun damage. 11. Monitoring and Maintenance: Regularly check the coop for wear, damage, or signs of predators. Clean the coop regularly to maintain a healthy environment for your pigeons. Benefits of a Tree-Mounted Pigeon Coop: Natural Environment: Provides a natural habitat for pigeons. Predator Protection: Elevated position can deter ground-based predators. Who is carving pumpkins this weekend? Festive fall decor on your front steps or porch is an endearing way to welcome the change of the seasons. Here are 5 simple tips to prevent wildlife issue without sacrificing the joy that these decorations can bring to your home. 1.) Remove ears of corn before affixing cornstalks to porch pillars. This will keep the squirrels from snacking on your front steps and potentially causing damage to your home. 2.) Make sure decorations to not create access to your roof. Rope webbing and large decor items that come in contact with your roof are easy to”ladders” for raccoons and squirrels. 3.) Keep straw bales in the yard and away from the home. Mice will frequently hitch a ride from the feed store to your house inside these bales, if you put them next to your front door or siding, they may end up finding their way inside your home. 4.) Keep pumpkins from being carved and left outside for as long as possible. Carved pumpkins become an odor/scent attractant and will draw many of our native wildlife species to that area like skunks, raccoons, opossums, deer, rats, and other rodents. 5.) During dark hours, turn your outside likes on 2-3 minutes before exiting the home through your decor area to scatter any wildlife investigating or feeding so you do not startle them into a conflict with you or your pets.
