Happy Registered Dietitian Day to all the amazing RD's out there 😀 During the month of March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is highlighting "Beyond the Table." Confused on what this entails? Well, here are the four subtopics that are being emphasized this month: Stay nourished on any budget, see a registered dietitian nutritionist, eat a variety of foods from all food groups, and eat with the environment in mind. These concepts and topics are important to highlight, however, let's really talk about how feasible these are for most Americans. - In 2020, 1 in 6 people, and 1 in 4 children were facing food insecurity-- these numbers continue to grow. Programs like SNAP and WIC often provide food assistance to qualifying individuals, however proposed cuts continue to affect both of these government organizations limiting the amount of Americans qualifying for assistance and further decreasing access to "healthy" foods. - With little to no coverage provided by insurance or Medicare/Medicaid, seeing a registered dietitian may be very difficult and expensive. During this month, I encourage all healthcare workers and the general public to review the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act as well as their local/federal proposed budgets with an emphasis to vote for improved access to nutritious foods and Registered Dietitians! Healthy and Nutritious foods are a human right. Please watch this 12 minute TedTalk that I came across on my timeline regarding food insecurity in America.
