🌍 Congratulations to our Friends and Partners at GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator for a successful 2024 Summit! 🎉 As science and technology accelerate at breakneck speed — from AI to quantum computing — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. 🤔 Are we fully prepared for the impacts on our world and future? 🌱 Let’s start by facing the facts. The rapid advancements we see today are both exciting and daunting. But rather than feel powerless, what if we embraced these changes with intention? GESDA, together with the United Nations and CERN, has shown that by coming together, we can direct innovation to serve humanity. As member of GESDA’s OQI – Open Quantum Institute’s Advisory Committee and SDGs Task-Force, the Beyond Lab is proud to have supported these efforts, offering SDG-centered frameworks and insights to the work on Quantum for the SDGs. 💡 Yes, challenges exist, and it’s natural to feel frustrated or question how we can keep up. But this summit has made one thing clear: through collaboration, we all have the power to shape the future and to ensure diplomacy and science are aligned, as testified by the Beyond Lab’s work with the #OQI, incubated by GESDA, hosted by CERN, and supported by UBS. 🌟 In times of uncertainty, hope prevails. It’s not just about recognizing the risks, but about embracing our role in creating solutions. As United Nations Geneva Director-General Tatiana Valovaya said in her opening remarks at the GESDA Summit 2024, "Let us work together to close the digital divides that still fragment our world and let us create a future where science, diplomacy, and innovation work hand in hand to build a more sustainable and equitable future for all, where no one is left behind." 📢 The Centre for EU-Asia Connectivity (CEAC) participated in the #EUIA2023 Conference in Brussels 🗓️ Recap Activity: May 3-5, 2023 📅  🌍 The European Union in International Affairs (EUIA) Conference, held at the Royal Academy of Sciences, serves as a major forum for academics and policymakers to discuss the EU's role in addressing global challenges. The eighth edition focused on “Europe’s Pathways to (Dis)Engagement with the World.” 🌟 CEAC’s panel, “Connectivity and Security: The Case of EU-Asia Relations,” highlighted unique interdisciplinary research and collaboration by Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) within the AREA Ruhr – Alliance for Research on East Asia Ruhr. The panel featured Ph.D. candidates from RUB and UDE and was moderated by Prof. Sebastian Bersick. It was a great honor to share the stage with Luk Van Langenhove and PIERRE-BRUNO RUFFINI during the opening ceremony of #EUTOPIAWeek at @CY Cergy Paris Université, exploring the question of why universities are integral to the field of science diplomacy. Science diplomacy bridges science and international relations, ideally aimed at addressing global challenges through collaborative efforts. Historically rooted in policy rather than academia, the field lacks formal academic structures, leaving universities to define their role amidst growing expectations and evolving geopolitical dynamics. Science diplomacy operates at three levels: supporting national interests, fostering cooperation with other states/actors, and addressing global challenges such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and artificial intelligence. In the current global situation, the first level is increasingly gaining prominence at the expense of the third. We must uphold the belief that science is one of humanity's most significant achievements and recognize the critical need for responsible guardianship of the global commons of knowledge. Universities play a key role in this effort, serving as ambassadors of science by facilitating global collaboration amidst growing fragmentation, advancing knowledge in the face of anti-scientism, contributing to evidence-based policymaking, and championing the values and innovations needed to address the complex challenges facing our planet.
