When we talk about Truth and Reconciliation it starts with the land. We definitely see how corporations were granted large tracts of land it created issues within the province of Alberta. First Nation were restricted and didn’t receive the same deal under the Homesteads Act, the ability to acquire additional land if certain criteria was reached by the farmers is not a clause in the Treaty. Bands were similar in nature an entity of the crown so the total acres should have been similar to these crown corporations. Do the research and understand the discrepancies no matter what the formula First Nations were ripped off…. #landback #truthandreconciliation

In 2015, Justin Trudeau made a commitment to uphold the 115,000mt commitment for Northern cod. This commitment is more than just an arbitrary number. It signifies the historical and cultural dependency inshore harvesters have for both Northern cod and adjacency. This 115,000mt promise is more than 50 years old, with references to the need for inshore harvesters to be primary beneficiaries of adjacent resources over and over again throughout Canadian history as early as the 1960's. The promise was first put into policy in 1982. It was repeated throughout the years, and after the 1992 collapse of cod, it became even more important to the people and province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Trudeau reaffirmed it in 2015. Minister Dominic Leblanc reaffirmed it in 2016. Minister Bernadette Jordan put it into writing once again in 2021. But Diane Lebouthiller broke that decades long promise last month and at a total allowable catch of just ~19,000t, she has ended the cod moratorium and permitted the corporate offshore dragger fleet access. In 1991, just 1 year before the complete collapse and closure of Northern cod, the total allowable catch for all fleets was 190,000t. And yet, we have only rebuilt just over 6% of this amount and our Government is bringing back in the draggers. It's abhorrent. It's immoral. It's egregious. And it must be stopped. Fish harvesters, scientists, ENGOs, current and former politicians (including Premier Andrew Furey), and concerned citizens alike have sounded the alarm on the decision. Reverse the decision to end the moratorium. Reinstate the Stewardship Fishery and reaffirm the 115,000mt commitment. Nothing less will do. www.saveourcod.ca

The federal government will not be deciding what happens with Alberta’s land or resources. Albertans will decide - including communities, Indigenous people, farmers, hunters, resource workers and stewards of our beautiful province - how to best manage provincial lands. This report is yet another example of Minister Guilbeault blatantly ignoring the Canadian constitution and pretending to engage with provinces to carry out his radical, ideological agenda. We will continue to conserve and protect our land, water, air, and biodiversity through a made-in-Alberta approach. Any plan we put forward will represent Alberta’s values, not Ottawa’s. The journey of 28 years of First Nation Land Management is a story of adoption from coast-to-coast. The first 69 communities to pass a land codes were from Ontario, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. The 70th vote came on March 2nd, 2017 in Quebec, becoming the 5th province with a community operating under their own land-based jurisdiction. We have watched as communities from nine provinces and one territory have learned about the opportunity and chosen to restore jurisdiction over their lands!

Reading this reflecting on how many regions face an over-reliance on grey infrastructure that misses the holistic ecosystem services provided by nature-based solutions. A sponge city - or land designed to soak up the rain where it fall with vegetation and rain catchment - builds climate resilience while restoring ecosystems that provide us with benefits like: increased air, water and soil quality, nutrient retention, carbon sequestration, habitat, biodiversity, urban cooling, not to mention the mental health benefits of a walk in the park. As Kennedy Halvorson says: "So why not explore the feasibility of an ecological option? Substantial research has shown that implementing ecological restoration practices upstream, such as replanting riparian habitat, adding large wood and rock features, re-meandering and reopening stream channels, and restoring and retaining floodplains, wetlands, forests and beavers on the landscape are incredibly effective strategies for absorbing water and slow flows, mitigating effects downstream. Protecting and investing in native ecosystems increases the landscape’s functional storage of water without the need for new dams and reservoirs."

As we approach Treaties Recognition Week (November 6-10, 2024), it’s important to remember the complex history behind Toronto's development, particularly the original Toronto Purchase – an agreement intended to secure land from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. In 1787, the British Crown entered a purchase agreement with the Mississaugas for lands along the northwestern shores of Lake Ontario. However, this initial “Toronto Purchase” left many details vague, leading to misunderstandings over the territory covered and the agreed-upon value. These issues underscored a lack of equitable exchange and left the Mississaugas with limited access to their lands. In 1805, a new treaty (Treaty No. 13) was created to redefine the boundaries and finalize the transaction. This treaty aimed to clarify terms, but again, the compensation was far from fair. It wasn’t until 2010 that a settlement was reached, with the Mississaugas receiving financial compensation in recognition of the historic shortfall. It's not that land acknowledgements are bad, but they're only the first step. To me, land acknowledgements are the introduction to one's reconciliation work, like the formality before we get into the details. Reconciliation strategies come in all shapes and sizes, so I feel they have a place no matter the scale of one's group or organization.
