⚠️ Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s food systems and its blockades of humanitarian aid amount to intentional starvation of the population. 🆘 Palestinians in Gaza face imminent famine. ➡️ A new FIAN International briefing with Palestinian Union of Agricultural work Committees (UAWC) highlights multiple human rights violations, including use of starvation as a weapon of genocidal war. 🇵🇸 It calls for an immediate ceasefire, unconditional provision of humanitarian aid, and long-term Palestinian food sovereignty and self-determination. 👉 Read it here: https://bit.ly/3ILClz7 #Gaza #Starvation #Genocide #GazaFamine #foodsovereignty #selfdetermination #Palestine #FreePalestine #CeasefireNow #foodsystems #humanitarianaid Michael Fakhri FAO UNRWA IPES-Food Al-Haq Organisation | مؤسسة الحق World Food Programme ActionAid Focus on the Global South CETIM_Centre Europe-Tiers Monde Transnational Institute Lauren Phillips Benjamin Davis Francesco Motta Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

The CGIAR has a unique response capacity ready to help avoid the worst in Sudan. To boost food supplies and prevent depletion of productive assets, we are working with a network of NGOs to provide Sudanese farmers with high-quality seeds, agrochemicals, livestock vaccines, and fuel on an emergency basis. The situation requires the sustained presence of support agencies and we need more investment to fully maintain the network working. This year’s #WorldFoodDay theme “Right to Foods for a Better Life and Future" highlights the importance of food access. Let's revisit Devex articles examining how this fundamental right has been compromised by groups weaponizing food during wartime. 1) The norms prohibiting the use of starvation as an instrument of war and diplomacy are being eroded as seen in the wars in Gaza and Ukraine.⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dr-bw6Ua 2) Back in July, the US agreed in principle to resume food aid to Yemenis living in northern areas controlled by Houthis. The Biden administration first suspended food aid in Aug. 2023 after Houthis detained UN aid workers and attacked ships on the Red Sea.⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dqf5mySE 3) Three major maritime trade routes — the Red Sea, Black Sea, and Panama Canal — face simultaneous disruptions due to geopolitical and environmental shocks. It's hurting global food security but also creating opportunities for new routes.⬇️ https://lnkd.in/deutETQr 4) Sudan's civil war has been raging for over a year. And although urgent aid pledges have been made, it's time to move beyond short-term relief and invest in sustainable food production systems to address the ongoing crisis, write Sibongani Kayola & Bram Govaerts in this op-ed.⬇️ https://lnkd.in/df7CpbXU 5) A year into the Israel-Hamas war, about two-thirds of Gaza's cropland is damaged; 95% of cattle are dead; and half of all greenhouses and wells are destroyed.⬇️ We took a look at the conflict's impact on Gaza's agricultural sector. https://lnkd.in/dafmMjJ4 Global food security certainly faces challenges, but there's reason for hope. ✨ 6) In addition to encouraging better oversight, the international community also has a responsibility to challenge groups or countries that are weaponizing food aid or deliberately starving populations in wartime, experts say.⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ddBjEZdg 7) In the war-torn region of northern Ethiopia, school meals serve as an inexpensive, vital lifeline to get kids back into the classroom. But with limited resources, foreign donors are struggling to fill the gap. In come local groups.⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ddUwrhJP

How many of us are keeping our eyes on the ball of food + land, wherever we live? These seem to get left out of so many conversations, and yet there is perhaps nothing so fundamental to us as humans. As a teacher once said, the way we treat land is the way we treat certain people, and vice versa. And as more of us seem to be recognizing, food is powerful medicine in myriad ways. "The destruction of #foodsystems in Gaza and Canada is part of a larger effort of land dispossession and capitalist accumulation. By severing Indigenous Peoples’ connection to their food systems, settlers and colonial regimes have sought to control not only the land but also the people who depend on it. "Yet, through #foodsovereignty movements, these same populations are reclaiming their right to self-determination and building global networks of #solidarity. The struggle for food sovereignty is inseparable from broader struggles for land, justice and self-determination." https://lnkd.in/ea49yyhw

As the continent continues to grapple with food insecurity and the effects of climate change, I believe that a national agricultural conference is long overdue in many African countries. The recently reported urging of President Salva Kiir to organize such a conference in South Sudan serves as a reminder of the crucial role that agriculture plays in the socio-economic development of our nations. Such a gathering would bring together stakeholders from various sectors to deliberate on the challenges facing our agricultural sector and identify opportunities for growth and development. It is through these kinds of conversations that we can unlock the potential of agriculture to drive economic growth, improve food security, and enhance the livelihoods of our people #abutispinach #Agvocate #AgroDiplomacy 🌾👨🌾💡

I have reviewed the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report on emergencies and resilience in Sudan, and the report paints a bleak picture of the current situation. Through monitoring and follow-up, the report showed the great difficulties facing agricultural crop harvesting operations, as a result of agricultural projects being located within hot spots and affected by attacks by non-governmental forces. The report also addressed the animal health crisis that exacerbates the suffering of farmers, in addition to the inability of many citizens to obtain basic services. The report indicated that there was almost negligence in the delivery of humanitarian aid to Sudan, as the percentage of aid that arrived did not exceed 20% of that agreed upon, despite the international community expressing its commitment to providing support. I call on the international community and humanitarian organizations to assume their responsibilities fully and urgently towards this humanitarian crisis that the Sudanese people are experiencing. The Sudanese deserve peace and dignity. #Sudanese_Deserve_Peace #Justice_for_Sudan Image created by artificial intelligence

#analysis: EU boosts Kenya's illegal fishing, waste dumping war 20 June 2024 European Union will support Kenya's war on illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the territorial waters that denies the country billions in revenue. https://lnkd.in/dEjsEMzD #perspective #Note: 'Dahomey' was part of the Oyo kingdom.Oyo is Luo bito (Judah) Settlements of Luos are heavily policed by anti riot and special units. The West profile Luos as dangerous; which fuels crisis mongering. To make it difficult for Luos to benefit from fishing industry, EU pushed fish factory out of Luoland, and invested some 147.3 km away from Fish landing centres or sites are associated with small-scale marine and inland fisheries; August 1, 2023 The Kakamega fish processing factor is set to begin exporting fish to the European Union market after it was certified to meet the international standards of the bloc. https://lnkd.in/dczS-9DY Kenya and Tanzania are among the top recipients of aid money in East Africa, along with Uganda. In 2022, Kenya received $3.3 billion in official development assistance (ODA), Tanzania received $3 billion, and Uganda received $2.4 billion. This is more than other countries in the East African Community. The United States has been a major donor to Kenya and Tanzania, providing $931 million in bilateral assistance to Kenya on average per year over the last five years. The US has also partnered with Tanzania on economic and development initiatives since the country's independence, including $546 million in agriculture aid, $579 million in infrastructure aid, and $3.8 billion in health aid. The same U.S that sponsor maginalization, aggression and discrimination against Palestinians and Luos, with agencies promoting propaganda against scattered Luos as violent and a population stigmatised with HIV/Aids. According to a 2009 review of HIV/AIDS prevention strategies in Kenya, some strategies may be exaggerated or tailored to meet funder requirements. Additionally, a 2007 study noted that the stigma associated with AIDS may overstate the risk of infection; High infection rates in Nyanza highly exaggerated https://lnkd.in/dkyJydjT The dehumanisation of Luos always comes prior to elections, resulting in a contexted elections and Luos being profiled and end up be targeted by the state. The 2007–2008 Kenyan crisis was a violent political, economic, and humanitarian crisis in Kenya. The crisis erupted after incumbent President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of the 2007 presidential election. Supporters of Kibaki's main opponent in that election, Raila Odinga of the Orange Democratic Movement, alleged electoral manipulation. Again, in 2013, 2017, 2022 the West has targeted Luos. The West has made it that Kenya to be celebrated as a democracy, the Luo population must be suppressed and in tears e.g September 4, 2022 Luo elders accuse the US embassy of profiling the community in recent travel advisory https://lnkd.in/d-u7TwxB

🌍 Today, we submitted ActionAid's response to the call for inputs from the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Mr Michael Fakhri. 🔍 We emphasised that food insecurity in #Gaza didn't start on 7th October. It is deeply rooted in decades of exploitation, colonialism, occupation, and restrictions on #Palestinian lands and resources, compounded by political failures to address these issues. ✊ Palestinians' food sovereignty cannot be achieved without peace, justice, and accountability. Whilst international cooperation and humanitarian assistance are crucial, they must be complemented with long-term political strategies that tackle the root causes of injustice, conflict, and vulnerability. 📄 Read our full submission here: https://lnkd.in/e_ddru_n #RightToFood #Gaza #FoodSecurity #HumanRights #PeaceAndJustice #CeasefireNOW
