This is Cashmere here... for those who do not know me, I am the one who started Fig 2. I won't do a thorough introduction, here, on this post, because that's not why I am writing this. Suffice it say, I wear many hats, running this company, but first and foremost I am always a female artist. What does any of that mean, in today's world, to be a female artist? It means, frankly, I've had to show up louder and more frequently than many of my male peers to get the same seat at the table. It means I have to stand my ground on design decisions firmly, and prove, over and over again, that I am knowledgable and professional in design and art, despite my decade of experience in the art world. And I say this not to slight the other half, but to make it known that it is no easier today, in many ways, than it was 50, or 100 years ago to be a female expressing herself in any medium. This week, this image of me reflected in Anish Kapoor's Untitled artwork, seen here at the High Museum in Atlanta, is how I feel on the inside. A hopeful spirit, fragmented into many parts, married with a feeling of infinite arrangement and possibility. I've been here before — on the precipice of hope and chaos. Many artists have. What do we do, in a time where everything feels hopeless? The only thing we know how; we must keep making art. To all of my friends in this art world, keep showing up. Keep designing. Keep painting. Keep singing. Keep writing. Keep voicing your emotions and thoughts at this turbulent time. The landscape we live in is harsh and barren and it needs you to keep showing up. I am sad and I am confused and hurt that we are here, again, but I am also full of moxie and things to say, art to make, thoughts to bring to life. This is how I will make it through. And for anyone being told or made to feel that you are not good enough, that your voice does not matter, that you will never be anything in this world tilted against you — prove them wrong. Keep going. Until we live in a place where all of our voices are heard. Sending everyone love and art. We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming next week.

When I was 27, I discovered I had a hidden talent for drawing. I'd never sketched or doodled as a kid, and I'd never taken an art class. They didn't even offer the most basic art class in my ultra-religious high school (a story for another time... 😜), so I really had no way of knowing I had any artistic leanings. Sure, I'd always been a writer (that's in my blood), but I didn't think of myself as "artistic" in the aesthetic sense of the word, and no one in my family really had those talents either, as far as I knew. So, when a friend invited me to join her at a local art class when I was 27, I expected to be the laughingstock of the class. Lo and behold, I unearthed a talent I had no clue was buried inside me. When I help my clients bring their inner magic to life, I'm not helping them all see they're actually mega talented musicians or artists (though that would be cool, huh?). What I am doing, though, is helping them understand and connect with the unique parts of them that are truly magical and transformative for *their* clients. Bringing that to life in a super impactful website allows them to connect that inner magic to their clients' inner magic — so they can help more people. It's a beautiful cycle I delight in kicking off 😊 (Pictured: One of my favorite drawings, of one of my favorite musicians of all time) #brandstrategy #innermagic #brandmagic #webdesign #drawing

Writing this as I sit in the National Portrait Gallery, thinking about inclusive design in public spaces. Galleries can be intimidating, and full of scary stuff. Not all children visit galleries with a safe adult to talk to. Imagining a scenario that could happen every day in here: A black child is on a school trip with a majority white group. There are no content warnings so school staff might not be aware of what’s round the corner. That child is then confronted with a 6ft painting of an enslaved African boy sitting next to a white lady ‘to highlight how white her skin is’, housed in a huge elaborate gold frame and crowds of visitors who might appear to be impressed by it. Leaving a child to free-fall through that experience on their own feels negligent. How can we do better to support young people in these environments? From what I’ve seen, museums tend to do a better job of providing context and storytelling specifically for children. Art is history so why do galleries fall short on this? The attitude in the ‘art world’ seems to be that content warnings are controversial. I’d love to hear about any good examples of inclusive design in public spaces, and whether there are examples beyond content warnings, and that speak directly to children? #Inclusivity #InclusiveDesign

Over the last decade, I've developed a metacognitive artistic process, crafting digital mind files documenting my journey. This digital one-man show displays a puzzle of the iconography of my existence. With each new iteration of digital graffiti I create, I catalog and rebuild my mind from the shattered pieces of a deprecated code, remnants left from the shadows of a previous existence. As the specter of old age looms, gradually casting its shadow over the present moment, the pursuit becomes imperative and centers on crafting a process that keeps the mind immersed in a symphony of thought and creation. This goal extends beyond the realm of artists; it is a universal aspiration for every human navigating the journey through the later years of life. Whether through the medium of diaries or the engagement in puzzle games, we all embark on a personalized buffet of processes, all converging toward the common outcome: maintaining a conducive fluidity of the mind as we gracefully enter our senior years. Throughout the passage of decades, I have intricately woven together the threads of my origin tale and life's trajectory, fashioning a digital puzzle that embodies the iconography of my unique journey. With each passing day, I embark on a profound exploration, meticulously rearranging the fragments of my digital mind and experiences, sculpting them into new compositions that serve as an ever-evolving exhibition of my innermost thoughts and reflections—a vivid portrayal of my life's odyssey. It is a cacophony of music, prose, and storytelling that reimagines my life’s journey in digital storyboards. The panels and videos I present encapsulate the world of artistry that has consumed my life. Through original content and curated pieces From the gristmill of our shared experiences my storyboards represent my character and creativity as a creator and also are a cognitive dance of healing for my mind as the years keep marching towards the final curtain call. Welcome to MY MIND. Art Collecting 101 Introduction Do you collect art? I never thought of myself as a collector. I just brought what made my heart sing. Then one day, as we were packing up our house in New York for our move to South Carolina I realized… wow, I have a lot of art. Was it all good? Was it all worth moving? Could I recognize the name of the artist? Oh wait, what did I just ask myself… could I recognize the name of the artist. That is when it hit me. First, yes indeed, I am an art collector, but was I collecting with purpose or with intention? No, as I mentioned, I brought very randomly. So I made a promise to myself to fill my new home with artists whose name meant something to me. As it turns out, today most of the art on my walls are female artists of color. Some established, some emerging, but all who create with a feeling of joy, of a life well lived. They still all make me smile, but their work also feeds my soul. So back to my original question. Do you collect art? Whether the answer is yes, or no, or even well maybe, follow me over the next few months as I delve into the value of collecting art and why I not only create art, but collect it as well. I promise not to get too deep. Consider it a series of conversations on art collecting 101. Until then, remember to color your life, one quilt at a time. #art #originalart #artcreative #creative #collector #artcollector #artcollectors #makers #fiberart #textileart #mixedmedia #mixedmediaart #mixedmediaartist "Swinging Willows", 2015 Artist: Renee Fleuranges-Valdes Medium: Fiber In Private Collection

Good morning, everyone! Thinking about compulsive, pathological and perpetual liars. From Google: “A compulsive liar lies because of fear, anxiety, and they do it so that they're avoiding any discomfort, whether that's uncomfortable emotions or situations. Pathological liars, on the other hand, lie to get what they want. or to uphold a certain image.” Those are genuine conditions. Now for the perpetual liar. The perpetual liar was a character on SNL portrayed by comedian Jon Lovitz that was famous for creating the most outrageous lies and afterwards would cap the lie by saying, “Yeah, that’s the ticket.” It was funny, but it also made the lie obvious! Today, so much of what we see and hear throughout our world … are, well … outright lies. And because of so many modern times factors, it’s really hard to sift out the lies from the truth. I was watching a politician recently and I swear, they must’ve told 30+ outright lies in a one hour program. The problem with really good liars is that everything they say convincingly sounds like the truth. And that got me thinking about the perpetual liar character. Wouldn’t it just be awesome if every person (boyfriends, husbands/wives, kids, criminals, businesspeople, etc.) had to end every lie with the phrase, “Yeah, that’s the ticket!”? It would sure make identifying liars a lot easier. Quit laughing, I think it’s a great idea! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Today’s art is “Stepped Pastels”.
