don’t waste your youth in corporate america like I did after graduating college, I spent 6 years at Accenture and Google. while I’m glad I spent time at both companies, I would not have done it for so long. marc andreessen has this great point where he says to look at your career like a portfolio with the end goal of maximizing financial outcome and life satisfaction. when you’re young, you have few responsibilities, which makes it the best time to pursue highly risky things like startups compared to when you’re older and have a family and mortgage. you also have more energy and time to put towards startups when you're young. working in corporate america when you're young has severely diminishing returns after 1-2 years (don't need more than that to get the credential) since: - you'll make many multiples of your salary when you're older anyway - the experience is largely irrelevant to building startups (if thats your plan) and actually teaches you the opposite intuitions - you'll meet everyone you want to meet and accomplish what you want to very quickly, after that its just power points and meetings until you die here's me on my first day at google - the beginning of human domestication basically

Imagine our country’s smartest researchers were able to analyze the career histories of over 65 million American workers and provide clear workforce recommendations to meaningfully address America’s declining economic mobility. Imagine no more - thanks to The Burning Glass Institute, this is now a reality. BGI, an independent nonprofit that advances data-driven research and practice on the future of work and of workers, has finally cracked the code. A new study by BGI, detailed in Steve Lohr’s November 21st New York Times piece, lays out how high school graduates can improve their earning potential. Providing training and pathways for those without college degrees is just one part of the equation. Government, industry, and non profit organizations must incorporate learnings from this research to promote the most promising career paths, setting up employers for success with “jobs of the future” and empowering workers to make more informed career choices. We have got to get our heads out of the sand. Empirical analysis is now available and accessible to inform our country’s workforce efforts. Let’s use it."

Policymakers often talk about creating jobs, however, WHICH types of jobs and for whom matter substantially. This report appears to give us some lights.

“For decades, economic mobility in America has been declining. And those most likely to be left behind are workers without four-year college degrees. Yet one in five workers with only a high school diploma defied the odds, according to a new study by Burning Glass Institute, an independent nonprofit research center. Those workers earned more than $70,000 a year — above the median income of college graduates — by the age of 40. And nearly two million, or 5 percent of them, pulled down six-figure salaries. Those overachievers often began in jobs that open a door to career paths and help workers acquire a mix of vocational expertise and communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills, according to the report, which was published on Thursday.” #economicmobility

🎓 You don’t need a college degree to build a great career. In fact, 1 in 5 high school graduates who go straight to work earn more than the median college graduate. Over 2 million non-degree workers earn six figures annually. But here’s the catch: your first job matters. Some jobs make you 4x more likely to become a top earner by 40, while others make you 4x more likely to end up in or near poverty. Launchpad Jobs: Achieving Career and Economic Success Without a Degree, a groundbreaking report released today by The Burning Glass Institute (BGI) and American Student Assistance® (ASA) highlights the pivotal role of first jobs in determining the career trajectories of young people who enter the workforce without four-year degrees. 📣 The findings are already making an impact, with coverage in The New York Times.
