The UN Member States adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris on 10 December seventy-six years ago. The declaration is a powerful expression of the rights and freedoms that belong equally to everyone, as recognised in the UN Charter. Today, the message of the importance of fostering human dignity is as urgent as it was after World War II. In its foreign and security policy, Finland is committed to on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to the international human rights system and treaties built on it. As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Finland has consistently advocated for the Council's global mandate to promote and protect human rights. Human rights are the foundation of Finland's actions in any organisation, and as such they will also guide Finland's forthcoming chairpersonship of the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) #OurRightsOurFuture #HumanRightsDay #FIinHRC

Glad to see my brief article on 'Enhancing Synergies between Peacebuilding and Human Rights in Africa' published today by ACCORD's #ConflictTrends. In the article, I argued that despite the intrinsic relationship between #Peacebuilding and #HumanRights, commensurate attention has not been given yet to mainstreaming this relationship into the policy making & interventions of the AU. Therefore, I call for stronger complementarity between peacebuilding and human rights by: - Strengthening the AU's Peace and Security Council (PSC) prevention mandate and an effective Continental Early Warning System. - Improved and systematized collaborations between the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the PSC, including collaboration with Civil Society Organizations and; - Establishing robust accountability mechanism to combat impunity and deter relapse into conflicts. I hope this makes a modest contribution to the AU's Peace and Human Rights agenda discussions. Thanks to the #ConflictTrends team at the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD)

For the 20th consecutive year, the U.N. General Assembly has condemned North Korea's human rights abuses and called for a high-level meeting on the issue. This year's resolution included notable additions: - A request for a plenary meeting featuring testimony from civil society and experts - More detail on the plight of forcibly repatriated escapees - Warning to member states not to share refugee information with the DPRK The resolution also highlighted the 10th anniversary of the landmark U.N. Commission of Inquiry report on DPRK human rights, which the Human Rights Council recently called to be updated. Myanmar’s human rights challenges for 2025 International Human Rights Day on 10 December is an opportunity to examine which rights may be at risk in Myanmar in 2025. The evolving dynamics of military oppression, the challenges facing any desired transition, the crackdown on civic space, the precarious position of exiled civil society, and the role of the ICC all hold profound implications for the protection and realisation of fundamental rights.

Why the United States leads the General Assembly is beyond me. There are more qualified countries by demonstration. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for ALL peoples and ALL NATIONS. Article 22 Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality. Article 28 Everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration can be fully realized.

🕊️ Human Rights Day 🕊️ "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now" – Human rights are a powerful tool to prevent harm, protect dignity, and drive transformative change. Yesterday, we celebrated the International Day of Human Rights Defenders. Today, on Human Rights Day, we continue to honour those who tirelessly fight for justice and equality. The UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders adopted by the General Assembly underscores the importance of protecting those who promote and protect human rights. We encourage governments to engage constructively with civil society activists. Let's stand together and support human rights, and the ones who defend them, everywhere. #BelgiuminSingapore #StandUp4HumanRights #OurRightsOurFuture #HumanRightsDay Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium United Nations Human Rights
