Since #Russia invaded #Ukraine in 2022, there have been calls for frozen Russian assets held in the UK to be seized, for example, to help fund the war effort or even for oligarchs' mansions to house Ukrainian refugees. Two years on, much of this rhetoric has remained just that. Anna Bradshaw spoke to POLITICO about the legal standing to seize frozen Russian assets, saying that “the British government is unlikely to be comfortable forging a brave new legal order”. On 20 August, the Верховна Рада України supported the draft law on the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons fighting for #Ukraine. According to Censor.NET, this was reported by Ukrainian MP Iryna Herashchenko. "315 MPs supported the draft law on the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons participating in the defence of the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine #9585," Herashchenko said. The law proposes: ◾ Allow foreigners and stateless persons who are defending Ukraine to obtain temporary residence permits or immigrate, even if their documents are overdue. Grant family members of the military the right to temporary residence. ◾ Require citizens of the Russian Federation and Belarus who have become Ukrainians to submit documents renouncing their foreign citizenship within a year of the lifting of martial law. ◾ Allow new Ukrainian citizens to fulfil their obligation to pass exams within two years of the lifting of martial law. ◾ Suspend consideration of applications for citizenship from Russian citizens until one year after the cancellation of martial law (with some exceptions). Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a number of resolutions that allow foreign volunteers fighting against Russia to obtain Ukrainian citizenship if they wish, including their family members. https://lnkd.in/gQdiNTwP

📚 The ✨First✨ #AIDA Country Report on #Ukraine is OUT ➡️This is the first AIDA country report on Ukraine and it was written by the Ukrainian organisation Right to Protection (R2P) ➡️In 2023, 130 people applied for international protection in Ukraine. 138 decisions were taken by the authorities at the preliminary stage of the asylum procedure, resulting in 115 referrals for further examination (83%) and 23 rejections. ➡️In February 2023, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted new legislation which, inter alia, limited the right to apply for asylum at the border. 👉Since the full-scale invasion by Russia, Ukrainian authorities have used the imposition of martial law and a strict application of the five-day registration time limit as justifications for not registering or processing applications, despite the fact that current legislation does not foresee restrictions to the right to seek asylum. ➡️Since 2022, beneficiaries of international protection (BIPs) who fled Ukraine have not been able to issue or extend their protection certificates or travel documents from abroad. I wonder how many lawyers will support the International Criminal Court in public (eg a thumbs up on this post by Kenneth Roth or a comment)? If you know a lawyer who has been generally supportive of international law but has been silent about this particular conflict, this could be a good topic to explore. Does it matter if the ICC capitulates to bullying by the USA / West and so loses all credibility? #BystandersNoMore (I'm muting this post so we keep all comments on Ken's. Thanks.)
Biden is wrong to object to International Criminal Court charges against Israeli officials. The court clearly has jurisdiction -- the same basis that Biden accepted for the charges against Putin in Ukraine. And the claim that charges will interrupt ceasefire negotiations is contradicted by a long history of charges marginalizing extremist actors -- Bosnia, Liberia, Uganda. I explain in Foreign Policy: https://lnkd.in/e7TMHrRZ

🔴Reuters | With the support of Law for Palestine, PIPD, and ELSC, German human rights lawyers filed an urgent appeal against Germany's government to stop exports of war weapons to Israel, citing reasons to believe they were being used in ways violating international humanitarian law in Gaza. Such case could build up political pressure on the German government to be more transparent and declare which arms it is planning to transfer or which arms it actually has transferred to Israel. 🖇️Reuters reported on the pressing legal action regarding German arms exports to Israel: https://lnkd.in/ghYVWf7A
