WEATHER IMPACT: Helene left a deadly swath of destruction as she made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Florida's Big Bend then barrelled her way across Northern Florida and into Georgia. As grim details continue to unfold, the stations On Your Side were with you before, during and after the storm. The First Coast News Most Accurate Weather Team forecasted the weather impact alert day nearly a week prior. On NBC12, ABC25, streaming on First Coast News+ and Firstcoastnews.com, viewers found a safe-haven for news and weather, without the hype. An example of this, our proof-of-brand produced by marketer Demetrius Kennon. When we say team coverage, we mean it. Lifestyle co-hosts and sports reporters became your eyes in the hardest hit areas, providing live reports from Waycross, GA to Jacksonville, Gainesville and Tallahassee. Our commercial production manager hit the road as a photojournalist and our weekend meteorologist showcased his drone skills and reported live. It's not just our job to keep you safe and informed, it's what we believe is right as journalists and meteorologists. It's what we do. And we trust you'll stay with the station that lives its brand throughout the next major event. Unfortunately, two TV appearances were canceled in 12 hours, but one thing is for sure: my hair is on point this morning. Best wishes to those in Hurricane Helene's way, and here is a tip: PACK READING MATERIALS AND MAKE DIGITAL COPIES OF HOMEWORK TO STAY ON TOP OF COURSEWORK DURING AN EVACUATION. KEEP BACKUP BATTERIES, AND CONSIDER USING YOUR MOBILE DEVICE AS A HOTSPOT TO ACCESS EMAIL AND SCHOOL UPDATES. INCLUDING HOMEWORK IN YOUR EMERGENCY KIT AND HAVING A STRUCTURED PLAN HELPS NORMALIZE THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION, OFFERING A SENSE OF CONTROL AND ROUTINE. NORMALIZE WHAT IS ALREADY AN ABNORMAL SITUATION. I believe verifiable information is the most significant concern during times of crisis. We've seen how individuals with platforms don’t always adhere to the ethical standards that journalists uphold. After repeated instances of misinformation, the public starts to recognize this discrepancy. Traditional news media must acknowledge the appeal of influencers. Their feeds are relatable and resonate with younger audiences who seem less concerned about how they receive information—just that they receive it. I recently had a conversation about this very topic. While reporting and sharing information should maintain a level of professionalism, it shouldn't become a performance. People can see through that façade. Influencers often connect with everyday individuals, making them appear reliable—whether they truly are or not. Consider the early days of television, when anchors took calls live on air, like Walter Cronkite receiving the news of LBJ’s death. Audiences naturally look to us to be both professional and skilled in our craft. Authenticity is what truly resonates today.
All the tiktoks I'm seeing about Hurricane Milton have shown me how decentralized news is. Every day people are delivering raw, real-time updates, often faster than traditional news outlets. It's no longer about polished anchors - it's about people living through the story. How do you think the traditional news industry can adapt to this change? #HurricaneMilton

NO CREDIBILITY INDEX(TM} IN STORM PREDICTIONS? Living in the Orlando area I will be facing hurricane Milton in a few days. For those of you who scanned my recent post on the importance of credibility index … here is a prime example of over-confidence: Local TV stations blindly reporting detailed predictions of rainfall, wind, etc. The reporters have no idea of the ‘goodness’ of the data. In fact, the modeling people don’t either! Yes … there will be rain, will be wind. Let’s just prepare for the worst and work towards providing viewers with information that is tagged with a metric of reliability.

Earlier this month, Louisiana was hit by Hurricane Francine. To better understand how the storm impacted media habits, TVB collaborated with Dynata to analyze the media usage of residents before, during, and after the disaster. Among the findings: 📺 "The main, and most trusted, information source for residents in a time of crisis is their local broadcast TV station and assets." 📈 "75% of those surveyed sought information from their local broadcast TV news station. Social media was a distant second with 48%." 💚 "Local TV news assets were the most trusted source for coverage. 92% of respondents agreed that local TV news was the most trusted, while streaming local TV news from websites and apps was the second most trusted with 86%." In the wake of this, it is clear that local broadcast TV remains a lifeline for residents during crises. Long live local broadcast. #Denver7 #KMGH #HurricaneFrancine #LocalNews #Crisis #MediaTrust #BroadcastNews #CommunitySupport #EmergencyPreparedness #InformationLifeline #LouisianaNews #TrustedSources
