On the occasion of National Science Day, it's imperative to highlight the pivotal role of leadership in navigating global emergencies such as pandemics. Imagine two identical nations confronting a pandemic: one led by a proactive, science-driven leader adept at public communication, and the other led by a leader lacking these competencies. Their responses would exhibit stark differences. Can we finally acknowledge that empowering women leaders and leadership is more complicated than we currently understand? But for now can we acknowledge that fronting for Koch Industries and Big Oil disruption campaigns is not what anyone thought they were getting when they supported the appointments of Susan Hockfield and Sally Kornbluth as MIT's first and second women presidents? Sally Kornbluth didn't even get to choose her own 2024 Commencement speaker. Rafael Reif, who pocketed $4.5 million from Schlumberger while lying to the MIT community about what MIT was doing in Russia (drilling for shalke) and what Jeffrey Epstein was doing in the Media Lab (for starters, funding fraudulent MIT research, #openag), moved his own crony friend into the slot. Esther Duflo, Cindy Barnhart, Richard Lester, Ian Waitz, Penny Chisholm — this has happened on your watch. Stand up, say mistakes were made. But don't let 20 years of corruption and crime that began in 2004 with a secret deal between David and Charles Koch, John Deutch, Ernest Moniz, and president-elect Susan Hockfield, continue to kill the transformations we so urgently need to survive the crisis of #globalwarming. We will never make progress by investigating fossil fuels directly. They are invulnerable with their billions. But all of the same evidence can be found at MIT. It is lying out in the open. #investigateMIT
