As the winter truly gets underway, I've been indulging in some of my favourite poetry over on my Substack. Old ENglish poetry is perfect for this time of year as is the 14th-Century chivalric romance Sir Gawain & The Green Knight. Stanza forms are the building blocks of poetry, each with distinct structures and characteristics. It is a series of lines arranged together by their repeating meter or rhyme. Stanzas are separated to divide and organise a poem. In poetry, they function similarly to how paragraphs function in prose. The number of lines typically defines various types of stanzas. Poets use stanzas to influence a poem’s structure, rhythm, shape, and organisation. ...READ MORE #english #englishclasses #englishteacher #englishlanguage #englishlearning

In literature, particularly in poetry, language reaches the height of its power, making it a space of great responsibility. Literary scholar Uilleam Blacker comments on Ukrainian wartime poetry, using a text by Halyna Kruk to explain why literature in the Western world often falls short of its full potential. Below are selected excerpts from the text. Read the full article in "Opinions" via the link: https://lnkd.in/dMMDGqTf “We westerners, comfortably hemmed in by the safety of our states, our borders, our armies, free to believe that literature is not a matter of life and death, all the while not realising that we are only using a small part of it, of its potential, only shouldering a tiny fraction of the burden of its responsibility” “We do not need, as Ukrainians have, to remove the buffers from these tracks, from this static literary place. We don’t need to move out into a war-torn landscape. We don’t know how it feels to be unprotected” “For us, the western guests— concerned, engaged, excited to be there—literature is first and foremost art, entertainment, intellectual and spiritual edification. It is not a literal means of survival, a tool that allows us to live with another’s dying cry in our ears. It should not be a burden” “Literature, and especially poetry, is where language goes to reach the heights of its power and it is thus a space of great potential and of great responsibility” “Ukrainians read and escape through reading during the war just as they watch movies, dance, sing, shop or make love. But in each of these activities, joy, relief, catharsis are tinged with—or perhaps sometimes enhanced by? —the horror of war, the fear of the air raids, the bombings, the fear for loved ones at the front or missing” “This intense exploration of how it is to be a human being alongside other human beings in wartime, how it is to be an ordinary human being who cries, bleeds, laughs and dances all at once, this is what I have learned over the last two years of reading the new Ukrainian poetry of war. It has shaken me like no other poetry has”

How are you now-a-days? I know you cannot help without writing. Your, What am I? and What Is Poetry? contain in your images and ideas. Your sole stature will come to light someday. I received your M.O. and the packet and the latest works of poetry which you have dispatched to me. I wonder, wonder at the works and titles of your poetry. You have written so much away from the limelight. Those who had not to be are, but I deplore you are not! I opened the packet and cast a cursory glance and had been turning over. You are a talented poet and your talent lies it unappreciated. Now after reading your works, I have been able to re-discover you. I do not know anyone of your talent in contemporary poetry. Your Unknown Citizen shows the mastery and craftsmanship you have acquired after reading British poets and authors. It is an introspection on Auden’s poem or a deviation from? Well-written, well-written, Dubey. I admire you for your ideas and images which come to your mind so profusely. The words and phrases show a command over the vocabulary. I have not seen anyone using it. I have met many literary men and poets, but your vast acumen and comprehension of British classics and their masters have contributed so richly. Though laid down with fever and being unwell, I had been reading in flashes and wished to acknowledge the receipt just now. I had met so many professors, but they do not have a grip over and a clear understanding of modern British poetry which deserve you so richly, ably. -------Sri P.K.Majumder, 20.9.12 When asked about your newest writing, you said to me about Duplicate Ph.D. Do you want to criticize and complain against? Are you pin-pricking here? Abandon that. You have written so much. What have you not, satires, love poems and metaphysical ones? Sometimes when I find time to attend to, I turn over A College Girl. ----Prof.R.A.Singh, 27.6.12

“Poetry not only has the power to transport us into history and enrich us with incredible tales of ancient civilizations, it’s also an incredible tool for understanding those around us and most importantly for understanding oneself. In addition to understanding the importance of expression, poetry increases our writing skills. Through poetry we learn about structure, and how to allow our words to get carried away by the artistic flow. Reading poetry strengthens our understanding and analysis, while helping us to empathize and identify feelings the writer describes, giving us alternative ways to perceive everyday things, and broadening our perspectives. One of the most important and beneficial things when writing poetry is the encounter with oneself, the opportunity to heal through words, to understand a myriad of emotions that are camouflaged within us.” #poetry #reading #writing #healing https://lnkd.in/gEeGdZ3h
