Full steam ahead towards the summer holidays! I read a column today about differences between Finnish and German holiday cultures (in the comments). As I was taking a moment to get ready for the week to come, it got me thinking about the pros and cons of a quite concentrated summer holiday. Every June, we Finns tend to want to „finish the world“ so that things don‘t get put off too long due to the holiday season and it feels like things are at their busiest just before. For example my coming week looks like this: Monday, meeting with a significant Timber customer whose top management is coming a long way to meet us. Tuesday, meeting a large Forest investor, talking about merging economic and biodiversity related goals in forestry. Wednesday morning, meetings with the team in Tampere, followed by a couple of days at Suomi Areena (a large yearly gathering of politicians, NGOs, business folks…) in Pori. Friday, lots of meetings still to tick things off before the summer. …Still, there‘s somehow always work to be done in August as well. The good part is that the holidays themselves tend to be well respected and actually a good time to first switch off and then start reflecting on where to focus after. People are typically off at the same time as well meaning that the rest of the year teams can work quite effectively. The potential downside is that there‘s this 2 month intense period just before, meaning that the breather is actually needed! 💜 Challenged 👚 On May Day I took the #soilyourundies opportunity, To join the May Challenge of the compost community. Following the instructions, I placed some cotton-textile, In my balcony biodiversity, guarded by a spoon and a reptile. My purple-green tiara, an Octopus-plant divine, My first rescued co-living mate, in my apartment's sunshine. A tiny piece, cast away by the street's beat, Instead of leaving it, I saved it from the heat. First, nurturing new roots to take a stand, Then planted in fresh soil, in my nurturing hand. Octopus expanded fast, its growth a marvel indeed, Thriving in its new lands, fulfilling its soil creed. Now in its newest home, ample space to roam, Mastering the balcony soil, making it its own. In a corner, biodiversity's dance, a random show, Mushrooms and green shoots, where flowers could also grow. That's how I know, Octopus can handle this month, Welcoming the challenge with my garment, a bond. The other pot, a haven for biodiversity's call, Unplanted highspeed growing, enchanting one and all. Meet Jacob Grace who joined our Customer Experience team in June and has a very interesting and worthwhile hobby outside of work - beekeeping 🐝 Jacob explains more: "I started beekeeping because I wanted to connect more deeply with nature and play a role in supporting our ecosystem. The idea of nurturing bees, which are vital pollinators, really resonated with me, and I was fascinated by the intricate, cooperative world they create within a hive. Plus, the prospect of harvesting my own honey made it an even more rewarding pursuit. Beekeeping felt like a perfect blend of passion, curiosity, and a desire to give back to the environment. I believe bee hotels are essential in gardens because they provide much-needed shelter for solitary bees, which are crucial pollinators but often overlooked. By installing a bee hotel, you can help to support these beneficial insects, offering them a safe place to nest and reproduce. This not only boosts the health of your garden by ensuring effective pollination but also contributes to the broader ecosystem by supporting bee populations that are vital to our food supply. It's a simple yet impactful way to make your garden more bee-friendly and sustainable".
