Did you know that the University of Lincoln has joined a scheme to work towards making its laboratories more sustainable? Lab spaces use 3-10 times the amount of energy of a typical office space and produce almost 2% of single-use plastic waste worldwide, so it’s important to work as sustainably as we can in the lab. The scheme is called the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), and is used in over 95 institutions in 15 countries around the world. Laboratories sign up to the scheme, and depending on the sustainability actions they take, they can be awarded a bronze, silver, or gold level. To embed sustainability in all our laboratory practice, we are aiming for all laboratories in the University to achieve Bronze by May 2024. It is a challenging goal, but one that will help us to reduce our environmental footprint in the University. More information about the scheme can be found here: https://lnkd.in/difM2s4v You can also contact LEAF Manager Julia Byrne for more information at jbyrne@lincoln.ac.uk

We measure today for a sustainable tomorrow The theme for World Metrology Day 2024 is Sustainability. Metrology provides the foundation for data-driven decision-making and policy development in sustainability. By ensuring accurate measurements across various aspects of sustainability, it helps organizations, governments and individuals make informed choices that contribute to a more sustainable future. Our focus for World Metrology Day in 2024 is on the numerous measurement opportunities that contribute to the establishment of a sustainable global economy and environment. The 2024 poster was designed in association with EURAMET and TÜBITAK UME, Türkiye. World Metrology Day is the annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original aim of the Metre Convention - the world-wide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

Dutch citizens throw away 33kg of food per person per year, what is the best way to combat this? The municipality of Groningen (Gemeente Groningen) has the goal to be waste-free by 2030, but a strategic way of addressing this still needed to be developed. Students from the UG minor Future Planet (Faculty of Science and Engineering - University of Groningen) participated in a project on how to best combat food waste. Franka Bergmann, Rick Dijkstra, Paula Luise Seiffert, Iris Massop, and Lana Vasyanina decided to partake in this project, of which they presented their findings in the House of Connections - Rijksuniversiteit Groningen at a conference with industry experts and people from the municipality. Their recommendations will be implemented and assessed in the upcoming months. 🌱 We are on our way to becoming a climate-neutral and resource-conserving company. 🌍 That is why we are gearing our behaviour and our technology towards CO2 reduction and sustainable production. We see it as our shared social responsibility to ensure that our environment remains liveable. For this reason, our plant in Hohenfels is also a member of the "OHA! Ostbayern handelt" initiative. The OHA! Initiative is creating a strong corporate network for climate protection in which we benefit from each other's experience. 👣 The ecological footprint is not the task of one individual. Only together can we achieve a sustainable improvement for the future. At E-T-A, we have been on a joint "lean and green journey" for more than a decade. Waste-free processes, continuous improvements and trained, highly motivated employees have made it possible to recognise and exploit untapped value creation potential. In the section "Six answers for OHA!", our plant manager in Hohenfels Simon Lottner provides insights into our journey to becoming a climate-neutral company: https://lnkd.in/eTgEAGh8

The Hamburg Sustainability Conference concluded its first day with the "Hamburg Declaration" on Green Shipping, emphasizing the need for a joint effort to scale green fuel supply involving ports. ❓ What's the role and entry point for port authorities in the Global South? What's the entry point for concessional capital or public funds? And where must the private sector lead? We will try to answer some of those questions over the next three days at IAPH World Ports Conference. Maximilian Weidenhammer and I have mapped out some options here (and below): https://lnkd.in/ekd3RBCC
