FLEETCON 2024 OPENING KEYNOTE - Vince Lorefice Executive Director of Coastal Operations Galveston Park Board Learn about the history of Galveston and what has been learned from the natural diasters this coastal city has endured. Galveston has unfortunately been no stranger to the devastating impact of hurricanes. Over the years, this community has faced the wrath of powerful storms that have left lasting imprints. Galveston has witnessed several significant hurricanes throughout its history. The most notorious of these is the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, a Category 4 storm that resulted in an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 fatalities. This devastating event highlighted the importance of preparedness and sparked advancements in weather forecasting and hurricane protection measures. Other notable hurricanes that impacted Galveston include Hurricane Carla in 1961, Hurricane Ike in 2008, and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Vince will share some of Galveston’s ongoing efforts to improve resilience and infrastructure to mitigate the impact of future diasters. #FleetCon2024 #Galveston #FleetPros Vincent P. Lorefice

As of Saturday, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has officially ended - one of the deadliest and costliest in recent memory. These past six months have experienced above-average activity, with 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes. According to NOAA, an average season produces 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes for context. #TeamACDC assisted the state of Florida and its communities with back-to-back hurricane response and recovery efforts (Debby-Helene-Milton), as well as helping southeastern states with recovery, such as the state of Tennessee post-Helene. As a full-spectrum emergency management consulting firm serving clients nationwide, hurricane season may have just ended, but it does not end here. Our subject-matter experts are on standby for severe winter storms that can (and will) arise over the next quarter. #2024HurricaneSeason #Hurricanes #EmergencyManagement #FEMA #Recovery #Preparedness

🌀 It is officially hurricane season and we have a #DontRiskIt message to share from #BISCUIT the tortoise (who insisted on dressing for the part) 🌀 As I’m sure you’ve heard, this is expected to be an incredibly #hyperactive year for hurricane activity. NOAA anticipates between 17-25 named storms, with between 8 and 13 becoming hurricanes with winds of at least 74 mph. 😣 As a #Floridian and #commercialinsurance professional, I know how imperative it is to review your policies annually with your #broker to ensure you have valuations updated, proper coverage limits, and have plans in place to implement loss avoidance measures…and so does #BISCUIT the tortoise. #DontRiskIt The benefits of working with someone like me? M.E. Wilson Company and I work for YOU and not the insurance companies. I am YOUR advocate to get you the most unbiased, cost-effective, and strongest policy recommendations (or alternative risk solutions- super exciting stuff!) utilizing relationships the firm has built in its 100+ year history to protect your company or nonprofit organization. Learn the difference between our firm and others- reach out anytime for a second opinion or conversation. #DontRiskIt #TortoiseRiskSpecialist #EducationalAmbassador

10/12/2024 at North Port First Watch restaurant. It’s three days after the catastrophic hurricane #Milton made landfall in nearby Sarasota-Bradenton at cat3-cat4 strength. People asked us to evacuate and wondered why we flew in 10/6/2024 to Punta Gorda Florida from Chicago: 1-It was projected to be cat3 at landfall, several models favored Tampa for landfall 2- I wanted to learn how to prepare for hurricanes being also a homeowner in southwest Florida 3-I wanted to experience first hand how the home would fare with a hurricane considering that we don’t have impact rated windows yet. More so, we installed the prior owner’s plexi material that Velcro to the windows 4-Learned a lot about zones and along with zones that needed to be evacuated; we didn’t need to 5-Joan had a Christian women’s ministry conference this past Friday in Clearwater (it got cancelled) Did I think about evacuating? Yes, the morning all the way to noontime Wednesday, to head to safety in Miami. Did I learn a lot? Yes. Was I afraid and had fears? A bit. Have I experienced something like this before? The winds are stronger here in comparison to tropical typhoons in the Philippines. How about you, were you ever in a position of walking into a riskful situation to learn more about you, people, process, or facilities? How did you do? What did you learn? How did you handle your fears?
