FLEETCON 2024 OPENING KEYNOTE - Vince Lorefice Executive Director of Coastal Operations Galveston Park Board Learn about the history of Galveston and what has been learned from the natural diasters this coastal city has endured. Galveston has unfortunately been no stranger to the devastating impact of hurricanes. Over the years, this community has faced the wrath of powerful storms that have left lasting imprints.  Galveston has witnessed several significant hurricanes throughout its history. The most notorious of these is the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, a Category 4 storm that resulted in an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 fatalities. This devastating event highlighted the importance of preparedness and sparked advancements in weather forecasting and hurricane protection measures. Other notable hurricanes that impacted Galveston include Hurricane Carla in 1961, Hurricane Ike in 2008, and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. It's the middle of hurricane season which means I need to write my annual update on the Florida Hurricane Cat Fund and whether it can survive another year. Even with no storms last year, the outlook is sobering. The only way FHCF can remain viable is if there are no storms for a long time. Of course, if there are no storms for a long time, then the insurers didn't need FHCF cover, so it is quite a paradox! If you need it, FHCF cover may not be there for you. If you don't need it, there is a chance it may be there in the future. That's quite the sales pitch! Today's post is part I of II.
