Yesterday, I had the incredible honor of attending the RAEng Women in Engineering panel discussion. The stories and insights shared by the panelists were both inspirational and empowering, reinforcing the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and collaboration. 1. Esther Kimani (Africa Prize 2024 Winner, Founder of Farmer Lifeline): she shared her journey in using computer science to help farmers and establish Farmer Lifeline showing the power of taking action even when the path isn’t clear. She emphasized the importance of women daring to build themselves and being ready to excel when opportunities arise. You don’t have to be perfect—it's vital to have an outlet to be vulnerable and ask for help. 2. Fatou Juka Darboe (Africa Prize 2021 Finalist, Founder of Make3D Medical): Though she was unavoidably absent. She sent her speech which urged us never to let anyone's words discourage us. Instead, we should work hard, be the best we can, and prove our detractors wrong. 3. Indira Tshiteta (Africa Prize 2021 Finalist, Co-founder of BlueAvo): highlighted the essential role of engineers in solving problems. Despite her finance background, she successfully transitioned into engineering, showing that barriers can be overcome. We belong in every room we enter, bringing our unique perspectives and skills. 4. Michelle Maphosa (Africa Catalyst Phase 3 and 4 Awardee, Co-founder of STEMexplorerz): shared powerful strategies for growth: - Use affirmations and believe in yourself. - Identify a cheerleader to guide and support you. - Pursue continuous learning and take action. - Collaborate and find accountability partners. 5. Norah Magero: emphasized that engineering is about creating solutions to problems. Women often face additional challenges, but nobody is coming to save us. We must be our cheerleaders and create spaces for more women to thrive. The event was expertly hosted by Catriona MacArthur The RAEng Women in Engineering panel discussion was a reminder that a problem shared is a problem half solved. Let’s dare to build, learn, and collaborate. Support each other and continue breaking barriers.
