It is a common misconception that sex workers are more likely to engage in unsafe sexual practices compared to the general population. In reality, sex workers in Canada often prioritize sexual health through regular testing, contraception, and protection—practices that all sexually active individuals should maintain. Another prevalent myth is that all sex workers struggle with substance misuse. Like individuals in any profession, some may face challenges with substance use, while others do not. Regardless of their circumstances, those who do experience such struggles deserve compassion and support, not judgment. The YWCA’s STOMT program offers confidential meetings and outreach support for womxn engaged in sex work across Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Fort Erie, Port Colborne, and Welland. Individuals can access the program through internal, external, or self-referral (see our website under additional life skills development programs). Our Life Skills Facilitator and Transitional Support Worker offer flexible, as-needed meetings that allows us to reach more individuals, offering tailored support for the diverse needs of sex workers. It is critical that we approach these issues with an informed and empathetic lens, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their profession or personal challenges, receives the care and respect they need. For referrals, please contact our Life Skills Facilitator at kcooper@ywcaniagararegion.ca

"I thought girls always cry during sex". Young people are using porn as sex education. We could probably all guess that this is the case, but what are the real-life consequences of this dramatic shift in sex-culture? The internet has changed so much for so many, but the people it has probably affected most (young people) are quite possibly the least aware of these effects, as each new generation, lacking the perspective of the last, sees these changes as "just the way things are". In this short clip from An Idiot's Guide to Academic Research (Ep.11), Dr Emma Thurston scratches the surface of this problem . This is a really important episode, with lots of critical discussions about women's health, sexual agency, and some of the wider political issues involved in shaping these topics. When I started this podcast, I had no idea which direction it was going to go in, and to be honest, I'm still figuring it out! But conversations like this one with Dr Emma Thurston remind me how important talking can be. If I can help to educate just one person, all the hard work will be worthwhile! If you also think this stuff is important, please consider subscribing to the podcast on Spotify or YouTube. This is a numbers game and the only way to justify the existence of podcasts like this (to the powers that be, i.e. my employers) is to prove that people care about it. You can find the full podcast on your platform of choice here: https://lnkd.in/eD3CcMqK Thanks, Emma, for educating me. #womenshealth #womenssexualhealth #porn #nhs #contraception #sexeducation #fertility #sexualagency

When did sexuality become about “fitting in”? . . In a world that's increasingly hypersexual, we've somehow reduced sexuality to a regular meet-up of male and female genitals, forgetting that it’s really about so much more—self-discovery, personal choice, and control over one’s body and desires. Chastity has been driven to the back bench and not considered an essential part of sex education when in reality — it is the most effective way to protect against outcomes such as STDs, unplanned pregnancy and such . In today’s fast-paced, highly sexualized culture, chastity has become somewhat of a forgotten option. It’s almost as if the choice to wait or to abstain is no longer celebrated, and instead, young people are being ostracized for not conforming to society’s pressure to have sex at an early age. We now live in a world where boys and girls are encouraged to engage sexually before they even have a chance to fully understand who they are. They are out there seeking attention and validation, sometimes without fully understanding what they're stepping into. The power of CHOICE, which should be at the center of sexual freedom, is quietly slipping away. The narrative has shifted—choosing to wait is seen as “uncool” or “old-fashioned,” while being physically intimate early is normalized, many times even glamorized. But here's the truth: Your sexuality is yours to define….the key is that the decision should always be yours—not a product of peer pressure or societal expectations. 📌It's time we shift the conversation. Empowering young people to make informed choices about their sexuality is key—whether that choice involves chastity or anything in between. They need to know that they have the power to decide how and when to express their sexual side. Dear friends; How do we better equip young people to make informed decisions about their sexuality? What are your thoughts 💭 #choice #sexEducate #chastity #20daylinkedinchallengewithhaoma

#NavigatingParent-#ChildSexTalks What parents tell their children about sex affects kids' sexual attitudes and behaviors. Talking to children about sex helps transmit family expectations, societal values, and healthy behaviors. Good and effective communication about sex can prevent negative sexual health outcomes in adolescents. However, many parents find it difficult to discuss sex with their children due to long-standing issues and new challenges specific to modern times. Conversations about sex are hot topics such that they are discussed widely and many people are affected by their influences outside the home. #ChallengesParentsFace in #CommunicatingAboutSex* *Discomfort and Lack of Knowledge:* Truth be told, it's very uncomfortable or embarrassing to discuss sex with your own child. It's even easier to talk to someone else's child of the same age on the same topic. Our upbringing and cultural facets have made this discussion somewhat awkward. Additionally, some parents may lack accurate information or feel uncertain about how to approach the topic appropriately for their child’s age. *Fear of Encouraging Sexual Activity:* Sometimes, it is the fear that talking about sex might encourage a child to become sexually active early. Although there is substantial evidence suggesting that open communication can actually delay sexual activity and promote safer behaviours, parents often worry about being the ones to expose their children to this information. *Timing and Setting:* Finding the right moment and environment to have these conversations can be challenging. The absence of a conducive setting often hinders meaningful discussions. Parents also often struggle with knowing how to start the conversation. *Conflict with Personal Beliefs or Values:* Parents' personal beliefs or religious values may conflict with the information they feel their children need to hear, making it difficult to provide comprehensive sex education. *Digital Divide:* The rapid advancement of technology and the pervasive influence of social media mean parents often feel outpaced and out of touch with the ways their children access information about sex. Making it even harder to know what to say to them. Especially that children are growing up in a way that makes them less receptive to these talks.
