Today is World Water Day, so a perfect time to shout about Primafruit’s latest ‘green’ initiative…. rainwater harvesting. An idea first brought forward through our employee run Green Team, the initial aim is to use harvested rainwater to flush toilets in our welfare block, as opposed to the mains water currently used. On average Primafruit’s main water consumption is 253 cubic metres/month, from which the welfare block uses 98 cubic meters of water/month. By harvesting and using rainwater in the welfare areas, we can reduce our mains consumption in this area by 25 cubic meters/month. That’s a reduction of approximately 25%! The inaugural flush is due to take place in April 2024. #primafruit #worldwaterday2024 #thinkgreen

Always late to the party on Linkedin but I wanted to say how proud I am to be a part of publishing Tesco's new Farmed Decapod Crustacean Welfare Policy. I hope that this policy will help to drive change not only in supply, but also encourage other market players to adopt and drive positive change in welfare and sustainability. A huge amount of work on this was helped by Andres Jimenez Zorrilla 🔸,Krzysztof Wojtas and all at Shrimp Welfare Project, Cecilia Valenza at Aquatic Life Institute, Jane Bush at Crustacean Compassion as well as the real on the ground change that is being implemented every day by our expert suppliers who so actively help us find solutions to some of the trickier puzzles. The passion and knowledge always sits with the farmers first and foremost and its great to see such proactive innovation coming from our suppliers. Last but certainly not least, Kate Williams & fiona roberts at Foods Connected Ltd who do a huge amount of heavy lifting in helping me make sense of our seafood supply chains and the opportunities that they offer in the sustainability space. Link below to access the policy but an overview of the key highlights: 🚫 Tesco will not sell any live decapod crustaceans in stores and online ⚡ By 2026, 100% of farmed Penaeus vannamei (Whiteleg shrimp) will be electrically stunned. ✅ 100% of the suppliers will comply with recognised farm assurance schemes (certifiers), such as ASC, Global GAP or BAP 4 🐟 100% of the suppliers will achieve a Forage Fish/Oil Dependency Ratio of <1 by 2030 🦐 100% of shrimp broodstock used to produce the post-larvae (PL) for Tesco will be ablation free by 2026 (Penaeus Vannamei) or 2027 (Penaeus Monodon) https://lnkd.in/eGV5AWuA

By coordinating water, land and resources we can deliver maximum social and economic welfare fairly without compromising the sustainability of ecosystems. Policy makers should integrate water and wetlands into development plans & resource management locally. Conserving wetlands and using them wisely is essential if we are to achieve the water sustainability needed for people and biodiversity to thrive. #10thWorldWaterForum #WetlandsMatter

Have your say for the million of chickens and turkeys in Canada! New rules for the care of chickens and turkeys are being developed—an opportunity that only comes around every ten years! The Code of Practice sets the minimum standards farmers must follow, and your voice is essential to shaping these guidelines. From now until October 25th, you can speak up by submitting your top three concerns about the welfare of these animals. Key issues may include improved genetics for healthy outcomes, enrichment provision, eliminating physical alterations or lameness management. Remember, the Code focuses on on-farm welfare, so keep your concerns within that scope. Submissions must be respectful, concise (around 14 words per concern), and written in your own words. Your input matters! Join us in creating a better future for chickens and turkeys in Canada! Take the survey: https://lnkd.in/gEJy6BmA
