The Convention's mission is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands throughout the world
Info
Wetlands are among the most diverse and productive ecosystems. They provide essential services and supply all our fresh water. However they continue to be degraded and converted to other uses. The Convention defines wetlands to include all lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas and tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, coral reefs, and all human-made sites such as fish ponds, rice paddies, reservoirs and salt pans.

🌿 Tuned up for COP 15! 🌍 As FAO's focal point to STRP, co-leading Task 3.3 on Agriculture and Wetlands, we are excited to advance the integration of wetland conservation and sustainable agriculture. At COP 15, we will launch two e-learning courses, a technical report, and a policy brief, showcasing the strong collaboration between FAO and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. By promoting good agricultural practices, we can: ✅ Support sustainable livelihoods. ✅ Shape policies for better management. ✅ Conserve wetlands and enhance ecosystem services. With FAO co-leading, this initiative bridges global expertise with practical solutions, ensuring a balance between food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience. #COP15 #Wetlands #SustainableAgriculture #FAO #RamsarConvention #EcosystemRestoration

Today, the Secretary General Dr Musonda Mumba was a speaker at the Net Zero Symposium hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) at the United Nations Office at Geneva. Wetlands play a vital role in achieving net-zero emissions by acting as powerful carbon sinks while providing essential climate adaptation benefits. 🔸 Wetlands, particularly peatlands, store 30% of global soil carbon while covering only 3% of the Earth's land area. 🔸 Coastal wetlands like mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes sequester carbon up to 10 times faster than terrestrial forests. #ClimateAction #WetlandsMatter

🔔 Happening Next Week! Webinar on Designing and Managing Protected and Conserved Areas to Support Inland Water Ecosystems and Biodiversity. Lakes, rivers, streams, marshes, and peatlands—inland water ecosystems are among the most threatened on the planet. The world needs to prioritize reversing the curve of inland water biodiversity and ecosystem loss, and that means using the range of available tools in smart, deliberate, and creative ways. In October 2024, the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) published its first Inland Waters Technical Report, highlighting how protected and conserved areas can play a pivotal role in inland water conservation. Co-sponsored by IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the IUCN Protected and Conserved Areas team, The Nature Conservancy, WWF, the IUCN SSC Freshwater Conservation Committee, and Equilibrium Research, this webinar will explore key messages and findings from the report and showcase real-world case studies on effective inland water protection. 📅 Date: March 5, 2025 ⏰ Choose from two available sessions: Option 1: 9 AM ET Option 2: 7 PM ET Register here: https://lnkd.in/g4QFyniP #WetlandConservation #WetlandsMatter
