Showcasing Leadership in College Admissions Highlights -Your student does not need to have 10 separate activities. Admissions counselors understand certain activities, such as sports, take more time than others. They will want to show leadership, not just time-filling activities. -Your teen does not need to have played a sport to be a compelling candidate on their application. -Understanding the categories on the Common App for the activities. This will help your student see that they’ve done more than they often think they have. -No activity is worthless if your teen learned something. But not every activity needs to be continued if it doesn’t resonate, doesn’t lead to your student’s future career, or they don’t enjoy it. -Leadership is a lifelong pursuit, not just during your student’s high school career. https://buff.ly/3Xy5KVP

Inside Higher Ed knows that as administrators and leaders on campus, spending time every summer reflecting on the previous academic year is important. In the May 2024 Student Voices survey, students expressed great things about their college experience, with 78% stating that their education prepares them for life after graduation. Yet, just over half of students (52%) say they have some trust in their institution's leadership. As we spend the summer planning for the 2024-2025 academic year, what is your institution doing to grow to better fit the needs of your students? https://lnkd.in/evyNbvq3

Being a school principal today is more than just leading academics. With increasing competition, many of us find ourselves balancing the roles of both academic leaders and business managers. While our passion lies in nurturing young minds, the pressures of school admissions and operational tasks have become part of our daily routine. This is a reality many education leaders face, where the joy of shaping futures often intertwines with the demands of administration. Here’s a little sher to capture this irony: 'हज़ारों ख़्वाहिशें थीं कि बने विद्या के मिसाल, मगर दाख़िले का बोझ बन गया अब रोज़ का हाल।' As educators, how do you balance these dual responsibilities? Share your thoughts below!

NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE! We invite cross-functional teams of students, staff, administrators and faculty from each campus to apply for the 2024-25 Middle Leadership Academy by Friday, September 20. The Academy is an academic, year-long, professional development opportunity for evidence-based projects, collaborative learning, and leadership development. The program is grounded in a problem-based learning model that motivates participants to “lead from the middle” as they explore and apply strategies to support equitable student learning, engagement, progression, and success on their campuses. Interested teams should identify a team lead that will complete and submit the application on behalf of your team. Learning outcomes: *Equity – Examine inequities in student outcomes and understand the contributing sources at their CSU campuses. *Knowledge – Apply research-based evidence to advance equitable student success efforts on campus via a project-based model. *Assessment – Apply knowledge of assessment measures to appropriately develop and implement a plan to assess project interventions. *Relationships – Build relationships with colleagues on their campus and from across the CSU who are involved in campus-level efforts supporting equitable student success. *Leadership – Build leadership identities, skills, and agency to help lead equity-driven change within the CSU. “Soliciting support can certainly be unsavory and even craven if done in a way that does not celebrate the mission of the institution, the benefit to the students, and the remarkable outcomes of the alumni. However, when done the right way, in an open and honest manner, it affirms everything for which the college or university stands. Advancement can truly be a vehicle for moving the mission of the institution forward…No matter how campaigns are conceived, sized,, implemented, leadership is critical to success. Increasingly, that leadership comes from the president and casts him or her in the role of ‘Fund-raiser-in-Chief.’..No other institutional officer can create the vision, establish university-wide priorities, or make the case for support as effectively as the president.”

When someone presents themselves as the ultimate authority on leadership education, it’s worth asking: What story are they trying to sell? Take the Canada School of Public Service | École de la fonction publique du Canada, for example. Their #programs teach you how things should be done, not necessarily how things are actually done. They focus on processes for addressing problems, but rarely tackle the deeper issues within those #processes—issues that can leave public servants personally #vulnerable. And let’s be honest: the end stakeholder of these teachings isn’t the #Canadian public. The real focus often seems to be on preserving centralized power and maintaining the siloed #infrastructure of the public service (aka holding onto your own little piece of power). If you truly want to learn about #leadership —the kind that confronts #systemic challenges and #serves the #publicinterest—this may not be the place to start....like really - #gaslighting is super charged. Leadership is about #courage, #integrity, and addressing uncomfortable #truths, not just following a prescribed process. Maybe it’s time we look beyond conventional programs and rethink how we develop leaders who are equipped to make real change. Government of Canada Shared Services Canada | Services partagés Canada Public Services and Procurement Canada | Services publics et Approvisionnement Canada Health Canada | Santé Canada Department of National Defence/Ministère de la défense nationale Canadian Armed Forces | Forces armées canadiennes Office of the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner of Canada APEX (Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada) Environment and Climate Change Canada CBC The Globe and Mail Postmedia Network Inc.

Retention of young professionals is a critical issue in West Virginia. When early-career individuals see a clear path for personal and professional growth within the state, they are far more likely to plant roots here. Professional development serves as both a motivator and a retention tool by demonstrating that the state values its young workforce and is invested in their success. Providing growth opportunities is a prime way to keep employees of this generation involved, as well as incentivize them to stay within the same company. Check out this article I wrote for Generation West Virginia about how investing in professional development for your employees can strengthen your organization/company in the long-run!
💼 Professional development isn’t just a perk—it’s a necessity. Employers who prioritize growth opportunities for their employees see increased engagement, stronger retention, and a more skilled workforce. GWV's Communications Manager Jen Iskow sat down with industry leaders, fellowship alumni, and GWV staff to explore how initiatives like leadership training, mentorship, and skill-building workshops can empower young talent to thrive without leaving the Mountain State. When businesses invest in their people, they send a clear message: Your growth matters. Let’s build a brighter future together, one opportunity at a time. 🌱 Read more at: https://lnkd.in/eRzptJcM
