#TRECResearch: Excess Deaths in Assisted Living and Nursing Homes during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Alberta, Canada Assisted living (AL) is a significant and growing congregate care option for vulnerable older adults designed to reduce the use of nursing homes (NHs). However, work on excess mortality in congregate care during the COVID-19 pandemic has primarily focused on NHs with only a few US studies examining AL. The objective of this study was to assess excess mortality among AL and NH residents with and without dementia or significant cognitive impairment in Alberta, Canada, during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, relative to the 3 years before. In 2024, the New Hospital Programme (NHP) sought to develop innovative ideas from staff working in our partner hospitals, to introduce new ways of working and identify opportunities to develop best practice methodology. Applicants were encouraged to compile a robust evidence base for their innovative idea, demonstrate its effectiveness and explore the potential to roll it out across the NHP and wider NHS. The NHP had a fantastic response from NHP Trusts, receiving 69 applications from 23 Trusts. A total of 13 grants, funded by the NHP, were awarded this year, one recipient being Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT), who have been piloting their Silent Hospitals initiative.   The pilot project is part of the digital estate plans for the new Women and Children’s Hospital build and seeks to silence patient call bells on shared wards and in private rooms, sending the alerts quietly and directly to standard mobile phones carried by midwives and nursing staff.   The project hopes to modernise the clinical environment for patients and staff, facilitating better quality of uninterrupted rest periods, leading to quicker recovery periods and subsequent discharges for patients from hospital beds.   The trial is currently taking place on its post-natal ward to help new parents and babies get the rest they need in the early stages following a birth.   There is already promising feedback from the pilot, with evidence being collected and analysed from both patients and staff. EPR selected for Yorkshire and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust by Amy Archer-Williams via htn ([Global] oracle cloud) URL: https://ift.tt/F0pzaYt York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust have announced their preferred supplier for their integrated EPR systems, with Nervecentre to deploy its cloud-native platform for both trusts. Nervecentre’s EPR offers software-as-a-service architecture and access to real-time electronic patient records on mobile devices. The supplier highlights how the platform supports clinicians to work across trusts, with the technology enabling “integration with the wider care system whilst maintaining localised autonomy”. Paul Volkaerts, Nervecentre’s CEO, shared that seven acute trusts across the NHS are now utilising the EPR. Electronic patient records in the spotlight Last week HTN reported how East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has launched online hub My Pregnancy Notes at Lister Hospital’s maternity unit, facilitating delivery of a maternity electronic patient record system. We highlighted how Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has awarded a 10-year contract extension for an EPR system from The Phoenix Partnership (TPP), set to run for 10 years and worth an estimated £6,294,780. Nervecentre was also selected by Northampton General Hospital, with a 10-year contract signed and announced in July. We reported an update from Norfolk and Waveney Acute Hospitals Collaborative on plans to implement a shared EPR across Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals, James Paget University Hospitals, and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust, with the full business case now approved. Another shared EPR between Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust was reported upon in May. University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust went live with its Oracle electronic patient system in June. Also from the region Earlier this month, HTN noted how NHS England partnered with the North East Business Resilience Centre on a pilot project designed to tackle cyber threats by delivering ‘digital health checks’ for small and medium businesses in the social care sector in the North East and Yorkshire. Thank you to the Neil Courtier Fund for supporting a successful and insightful Interstitial Lung Disease Nurses (ILD) regional study day. The day organised by Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust ILD Service, focussed on: 👉 educating and upskilling nurses about ILD 👉 promoting best practice 👉 and setting up a formal regional ILD network. Nurses from across the two regions met at the British Racing School in Newmarket, to learn from each other and hear from a wide range of specialist presentations. Presentation topics included changes in national ILD services, progressive pulmonary fibrosis, managing side effects of immunosuppression, IPF and side effects to antifibrotics and palliative care in ILD. Emma Harris, Interstitial Lung Disease Consultant Nurse from Royal Papworth Hospital said: “The day was a real success, and we received excellent feedback from attendees, who were also keen to be part of a regional ILD Nurses network. “We are very grateful for the money donated from the Neil Courtier Fund, which allowed us to run the day and help improve ILD knowledge and skills for nurses.” Neil Courtier was a patient at Royal Papworth Hospital who suffered with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a lung condition that scars the lungs and makes it difficult for the person to breathe. In 2018, Neil sadly passed away and since then his family through the Neil Courtier Fund, have substantially helped to fund projects that improve awareness of ILD and staff education. #collaboration #pulmonaryfibrosis

A service which offers patients, their families and carers 24-hour access to a rapid review if they have concerns about a person’s deteriorating condition is launching in Lincolnshire. Call For Concern will give anyone worried about a loved one direct contact to a dedicated team who will give urgent help and advice. The service has been developed as part of the implementation of ‘Martha’s Rule’. Martha Mills died in 2021 after developing sepsis in hospital in London, where she had been admitted with a pancreatic injury after falling off her bike. Martha’s family’s concerns about her deteriorating condition were not responded to, and in 2023 a coroner ruled that Martha would probably have survived had she been moved to intensive care earlier. In response to this and other cases related to the management of deterioration, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and NHS England committed to implement ‘Martha’s Rule’ in the NHS nationally; to ensure the vitally important concerns of the patient and those who know the patient best are listened to and acted upon. Dr Colin Farquharson, Chief Medical Officer for Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group, said: “The Call For Concern service builds on the existing safeguards already in place in our hospitals to offer a clear and direct way for patients, families, carers and other advocates to further escalate their concerns and access a rapid review of their care.” Nerea Odongo, Group Chief Nurse for Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group, also said: “I’m very proud of what the teams have accomplished in setting up this service. In Lincolnshire, the Critical Care Outreach Team will be responsible for these reviews. They have extensive experience in caring for patients whose conditions may be worsening. This team, made up of specialist doctors and nurses, collaborates closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure that appropriate care plans are in place. A special thank you to everyone involved for their dedication and hard work in making this possible." The service will have a phased roll-out, with Call For Concern initially launching at Lincoln County Hospital for our adult inpatients from Monday 2 December 2024, and at Pilgrim Hospital Boston from February 2025. Call For Concern will include paediatrics inpatients at both the Lincoln and Boston sites from February 2025.
