This morning, we brought together a range of industry leaders to discuss the challenges, opportunities and potential solutions for the offshore wind market with Minister for Energy, Michael Shanks. Hear all about it from our Group Chief Executive, Leo Quinn, below.
We know offshore wind is a market that can help us to provide clean, sustainable homegrown energy. But how do industry and government work together to deliver these much-needed schemes so that homes and businesses can enjoy the benefits? This morning, Balfour Beatty plc brought together a range of industry leaders to discuss the challenges, opportunities and potential solutions with Minister for Energy, Michael Shanks. We know that more needs to be done to address the critical skills challenge in this market if we are to upskill and attract the expert individuals needed to deliver offshore wind projects. But we also need to simplify and unlock the lengthy and unpredictable planning and consenting process to get these projects moving. If we can do this, we will deliver transformational offshore wind projects, as well as the grid and supporting infrastructure needed to bring offshore energy, onshore. The Minister made clear that Government hears this loud and clear, and re-affirmed their commitment to the Energy market, ensuring that industry is supported in its delivery of their plans. I look forward to hearing more from the Government over the coming months as they clearly outline their plans for this market.

It’s probably no surprise to learn that we’re big advocates of ‘earn and learn’ positions. We’ve not been shy about the hundreds of apprenticeship, graduate and trainee opportunities we have on offer across our business and the wide range of benefits we think they can deliver not only for individuals but for businesses too. That’s why it was particularly pleasing to learn that – for the third year in a row - we’ve been awarded Gold membership as part of The 5% Club's 2024-25 Employer Audit Scheme. Founded in 2013 by our Group Chief Executive, Leo Quinn, The 5% Club is a dynamic movement of over 1,100 forward-thinking employers who are dedicated to driving positive change, working together to make workplace training more inclusive, diverse and accessible. We now have 7.4% of our workforce currently employed in ‘earn and learn’ roles – well above the 5% target – and look forward to this momentum continuing.
