Audrey Stoltzfus, PE, RSP1 is as avid a Montanan as they come! She hikes, bikes, skis, and camps in every wild corner of the state. Professionally, Audrey is building upon her Civil Engineering degree by immersing herself in transportation safety. She has taken a special interest in new and different strategies for making public facilities safer and accessible to all. Take the protected intersection for example. These are intersections that set back bikeways from the parallel motor vehicle traffic. Unlike a conventional intersection, cyclists are not forced to merge into mixed traffic. Instead, they are given a dedicated path through the intersection and have the right-of-way over turning motor vehicles. In San Francisco, a protected intersection design resulted in 98% of drivers yielding to bicyclists and 100% yielding to pedestrians.** We’d say that’s safety in action! Audrey also can’t speak enough to examining the entire system in safety evaluations. What facilities are in place? Who are the users? There are many more considerations than simply examining crash histories. We're in good hands with Audrey! *Credentials matter: PE (Professional Engineer), RSP1 (Registered Safety Professional - Level 1) **https://lnkd.in/gGNvwW4p >> This post is one in a series introducing Sanderson Stewart’s Community Transportation Studio (CTS). #Infrastructure #CivilEngineering #RoadDesign #Multimodal #PTOE #RSP1 #ProfessionalEngineer #Bozeman #Montana

🔦 Road Safety Spotlight: Designing Guide Rails for All Road Users 🚧 Traditionally, guide rail designs are primarily focused on vehicular safety. Vision Zero philosophy challenges us to expand our focus beyond vehicles to consider the safety of all road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists, who are the most vulnerable to sever injury. Here are three strategies improve safety of all road users: 1. Guide rails should be placed between vehicle lanes and pathways when feasible to prevent vehicles entering pedestrian or cyclist areas. 2. Wood posts are a safer alternative to steel posts with sharp edges when exposed to pathways. Some road authorities install back railings as a retrofit to protect steel edges. 3. Steel beam guide rails are not installed at an appropriate height to prevent cyclists from falling over them. In high-risk areas, paired fencing or structural railings should be used to provide additional protection. At Ontario Guide Rail Solutions, we are dedicated to implementing practical and thoughtful design practices that enhance the safety of all road users. #RoadSafety #VisionZero #Transportationsafety #Infrastructuredesign
