🚀 Fortnight ago, the 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 event took place, bringing together all stakeholders of the deep tech ecosystem: entrepreneurs, scientists and technology developers, investors, government, and public organizations. During the event, the 𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓 project was discussed and presented in a panel discussion at the Biocosmic stage. 🗝️ A key highlight was the panel discussion on the “𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦,” organized by the Biocatalyst Foundation. The discussion featured partners from the 𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓 project, including Donatas Staniulis representing LithuaniaBIO, Igors Berkovics from the Biocatalyst Foundation, and other discussion participants such as Emilio Parisini, ERA Chair, Biotechnology Group, Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, and Janis Locs, Director at RTU Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering and Baltic Biomaterials Centre of Excellence. 🌍 The discussion explored the biotechnology ecosystem across the Baltic states—Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. 🚀 Scientists from Palacký University Olomouc and the Technical University of Ostrava (VSB-TUO), in collaboration with colleagues from China, have discovered a groundbreaking method for developing a new generation of antibiotics. 🧑🔬 😷 These antibiotics not only combat a wide range of bacteria but also effectively prevent the development of bacterial resistance. By employing atomic engineering, the researchers transformed manganese—a trace element vital for human health—into a potent antibiotic by embedding it in the structure of chemically modified graphene. Tests conducted on animal models have demonstrated the material’s significant potential, particularly in localized therapies such as wound healing. The discovery has been published in the prestigious journal Advanced Materials, and the team has filed a European patent to safeguard their innovation. Leave it to Stanford University to figure this out. "Begin with the end in mind" will be familiar to the many, many people in industry who have taken 7-Habits training. It's an important mindset when launching a project. SPARK at Stanford / SPARK Alberta is applied to the biotechnology field, but could be easily translatable to other sectors (e.g. decarbonization of heavy industry). It also represents potential for substantial augmentation of traditional tri-council (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), SSHRC-CRSH, Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada) funding for Canadian universities and creating industry linkages that could bridge the gap in R&D uptake by the private sector in Canada, which has been well documented recently. I would argue the SPARK model could be made even more impactful if universities were to hire more people with industry experience into formal leadership roles, as opposed to only those whose careers follow the more traditional academic trajectory.

Most promising academic biomedical discoveries do not benefit patients because of the knowledge gap between academic research and commercialization strategies. To fill this gap, the incredibly successful SPARK model stemming from SPARK at Stanford has been adopted by over 60 universities in 6 continents, including here at SPARK Alberta. This is a great article about the SPARK program featured in the February 2024 issue of Nature Portfolio's Biotechnology. The incredibly successful SPARK model was developed by SPARK at Stanford and has been adopted by over 60 universities in 6 continents, including the University of Vermont's SPARK-VT. #ICIQSeminar | 🙌Thank you Prof. Tanja Weil from Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research for delivering a seminar about exploring controlled chemical reactions in complex living systems to generate drug molecules in situ. 🧩 Prof. Weil's research demonstrates that caged monomers form fibers in complex cellular environments. By introducing stimuli like pH or light, peptide self-assembly can be precisely controlled, enabling targeted applications like disrupting cell functions or activating immune responses. 💊 Combining different stimuli enables greater precision in uncaging reactions, as highlighted in Prof. Weil's seminar.
