Rugby league is a sport of fine margins and hydration can make the difference between a game-winning play and a costly mistake. Poor hydration slows reaction time, weakens muscles, and increases injury risk; or, sadly even worse. With climate change, and athletes pushing themselves further to the limits, the problem is growing. But the current ways of monitoring hydration are inadequate. Our world-leading Microwearables penetrate less than a hair’s width into the skin, allowing for direct access to bio-signals that surface-level sensors simply can’t reach. Being selected for the NRL Magic Round Tech Sprint, with the support of Advance Queensland and the National Rugby League, is a huge step forward. It allows us to refine our technology for elite athletes and bring the future of hydration monitoring to Australian sport. With this backing, we can give players the real-time hydration insights they need to play harder, go longer, and think smarter.
🌟 Exciting News from Advance Queensland & the National Rugby League! 🏉 We’re ecstatic to unveil the innovative businesses selected for the NRL Magic Round Tech Sprint, delivered by Advance Queensland and in partnership with ASTN - Australian Sports Technologies Network. From athlete undies to protective armour, inclusive access to Hollywood studio-level digital solutions – the diversity of the businesses chosen is nothing short of impressive. Join us in congratulating the eight successful recipients who are set to revolutionise the intersection of technology and sports: ➕ Forty Ground Floor (Crowd Canvas) ➕ Myriad Studios ➕ Talk All Sport ➕ WearOptimo ➕ Imagine Realities ➕ Cool Beans Underwear Pty Ltd ➕ Australian Armour Company (Fempro Armour) ➕ Cérge Each of these companies will bring their A-game to the NRL environment, showcasing their bold innovations and contributing to Queensland's vibrant future in tech advancements. We’re very proud to stand alongside fellow visionaries from across the globe, such as Beth Koigi and Felix Brooks-church, Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu, in ROLEX’s latest video for their Perpetual Planet initiative. The Perpetual Planet initiative supports those who go above and beyond to safeguard and preserve our planet for the next generation. Our contribution, at WearOptimo, is to reset the boundaries by creating smart micro-wearable technology, which unlocks a direct conversation with our skin. By doing so, we can live healthier, work safer, and compete harder.
For more than 70 years, we have championed innovators, researchers and scientific organizations. Through the Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative, we continue to support people working at the forefront of human knowledge and improving lives. They range from those researching the secrets of the universe, to developing technology that helps paralysed people to walk again, and many projects beyond. The “Science, Health and Technology Moment” is a chance to shine a light on these exceptional partners and Rolex Awards Laureates working to find solutions for our most pressing social and environmental challenges. We’re kicking off 2025 with momentum, after a pivotal final few months last year for WearOptimo. In 2024 we attracted support from healthcare pioneer Aspen Medical, and elite sports stars like former F1 driver Mark Webber (right, pictured with our founder Prof. Mark Kendall), and Rugby League legend Adam Macdougall. We also opened our Advanced Manufacturing Facility in Brisbane, the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere, pioneering the use of Nanoimprint Lithography for health-tech. We’re proud to see our CEO, Professor Mark Kendall, featured in @AuManufacturing news and media's ‘Australia’s 50 Most Innovative Manufacturers’ series. This recognition highlights the groundbreaking work of WearOptimo in precision health monitoring and our journey in building next-gen microwearables; including our advanced manufacturing. Stream the podcast to learn about our mission and milestones.
This week in our Australia’s 50 Most Innovative Manufacturers series, we hear from Professor Mark Kendall, CEO and founder of WearOptimo. Kendall's patents have generated an estimated $2 billion in economic activity, and this is the third chapter in his career as a researcher/engineer/entrepreneur. His previous work includes on a handheld "gene gun" and founding needle-free vaccine delivery company Vaxxas. A podcast interview is available to stream below and download elsewhere. Episode guide 1:13 – A 27-year career. From rockets to vaccine delivery to micro-wearables for personalised medicine. 2:33 – Introducing WearOptimo. 3:40 – Leaving needle-free vaccine delivery company Vaxxas and heading to Harvard for a sabbatical, working alongside Moderna co-founder Bob Langer and others. Saw the opportunities in wearables “gaining access to signals” at the “viable epidermis” skin layer and providing better info than light-based approaches in smartwatches. 4:50 – A few differences between founding Vaxxas versus founding WearOptimo. 6:30 – “Instead of thousands of projections coated in vaccines it’s just a handful of much smaller micro-electrodes going even shallower into the skin that are just gently applied to the skin instead of at high speed.” 7:03 – Not being “a one-trick pony” as an inventor. 8:13 – Healthtech is “a much higher-tempo game” than biotech. Why starting WearOptimo as a university spinout would be too slow. 10:10 – How skin works, how the micro-wearables work, and why hydration monitoring was the right first application. 11:55 “The only wearable on the planet that genuinely monitors hydration… The unmet need is massive.” Plus some examples of where this is expected to come from. 13:49 – Nano-imprint lithography is the centrepiece production technology – a technique used in TV screens and optics at the company – as well as an example of the company’s “field-hopping”. Kendall considers this a leap forward in the field of microneedles. 16:50 – Why Brisbane is the right place to produce micro-wearables, and why the company changed their mind about offshore contractors. 19:30 – How they selected their first market – “we need to walk before we can run” – and why it’s elite sport. 21:45 – No need for regulatory approval for initial markets. Regulated markets will follow later. 23:30 – Some characteristics that define a truly innovative company, according to Kendall. These include novelty and non-incremental impact. 24:45 – Developing high-tech businesses: “It’s not a game for the faint-hearted.” 26:08 – An issue that isn’t getting enough attention: genuine advanced manufacturing positioned on the world stage. Plus why “me-too” manufacturing is to be avoided. https://lnkd.in/geBeHQn9
