Today we launched CIP2030 strategy for Africa on the sidelines of the Africa Food Systems Summit in Kigali, Rwanda #AFSForum2024 The event provided a great platform to engage in deep discussions with regional and country-level partners on what is needed to effectively implement this strategy. We explored the alignment with regional and national priorities on root and tuber crops. It was an honor to have Dr. Karangwa, Director General of Agriculture Modernization at MINAGRI Rwanda, and Dr. Sobiniso Moyo, Deputy Director General for Partnerships and Impact at ILRI, on our panel. We discussed the critical need for innovation in how we partner across Africa and emphasized the demand for RTB crops not only as vital food and nutrition sources but also as key drivers of income generation. There is need to explore market systems and engage private sector more meaningfully. Looking forward to the collaborative efforts ahead to transform Africa's food systems International Potato Center (CIP)Siboniso (Boni) Moyo #FoodSystems #Partnerships #Innovation

🌱🌽 Exciting news from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)! HarvestPlus recently delivered over 30,000 metric tons of biofortified maize seeds to the FAO during a ceremony in Gungu, Kwilu Province. The event was attended by administrative authorities, a delegation from the Health System Development Program Management Unit (UGPDSS), farmers, and beneficiaries. More than 6,000 households will benefit directly from this delivery. The vitamin A maize seeds are part of the Congolese government's Multi-Sectoral Nutrition and Health Project (PMNS), financed by The World Bank and implemented in partnership with HarvestPlus. This initiative aims to combat malnutrition, address food insecurity, and enhance agricultural production. On this Throwback Thursday, we are spotlighting our work as partner to World Vision on the USAID/Zimbabwe Enhancing Nutrition, Stepping Up Resilience and Enterprise (ENSURE) Activity. ENSURE aimed to improve food, income, and nutrition security for vulnerable rural households in semi-arid provinces of Zimbabwe. DevWorks led the market development activities for five value chains – sorghum, beans, groundnuts, indigenous poultry, and goats. This included forming producer and marketing groups, and linking vulnerable producer households to private-sector buyers and services. For example, by linking sorghum producers with the World Food Programme’s Purchase for Progress initiative, we facilitated a four-fold increase in sorghum productivity and 93 metric tonnes in sales. Supported farmers also successfully adopted a new variety of bio-fortified beans and secured a large national food company as a dedicated buyer. Women producers credited their participation in poultry and goat value chains with a significant increase in their income.

One Health as a concept does not work in isolation but with neighbouring and complementary concepts. For example, the value chain approach can be beneficial to identify and map the One Health stakeholders in programs focusing on food safety and foodborne illnesses. See the work that I, Nicholas Ngwili, Ph.D, Lian Thomas, Emily Ouma, Clovice Kankya and others are doing in Uganda (https://lnkd.in/dMcRWKuF). This project aims to work with stakeholders to co-create interventions for Taenia solium control in Northern Uganda. Without structured approaches for identifying and mapping the stakeholders linkages and roles, we remain with a defective concept, incomplete frameworks, and ineffective approaches. What complementary approaches are you using?

🌱 🫘 In Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya, a significant transformation is taking place as farmers adopt Nyota beans, a biofortified variety rich in iron. This initiative, part of the “Integration of Biofortified Crops in School Feeding Programs” project funded by The Rockefeller Foundation and supported by HarvestPlus, is enhancing awareness, seed accessibility, and production knowledge. 🧑🏽🌾 A notable success story is Nathan Chejor, a local farmer who cultivated 2.5 acres of Nyota beans in 2024. Thanks to accessible local seed supplies, Nathan avoided a long trip to procure seeds, highlighting the impact of localized support in agricultural innovation. Nuru Nigeria is working with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to teach climate-smart practices to women farmers in northeast Nigeria. Farmers like Bless have learned how to grow healthier crops, as well as how using improved seed varieties can make crops weather-resistant. As a result of this partnership, crop yields have increased, improving food security and household nutrition. #NuruNigeria #WomenFarmers #SmallholderFarmers #ClimateAdaptation #PlantingHope

On World Population Day 2024, under the theme "Leave no one behind, count everyone," Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd has chosen to adapt this focus to "Leave no one behind, nutrition for everyone," underscoring our steadfast dedication to ensuring access to protein in Africa. Given Nigeria's projected population exceeding 377 million by 2050 and the mounting challenges of food scarcity and rising costs, the challenge of food insecurity looms larger than ever. At Amo Farm, we recognize the urgent need to bridge the gap between population growth and access to vital nutrition. Through our innovative Noiler farming solution, we are dedicated to providing sustainable protein sources to communities across Africa. Our vision is clear: by 2025, we aim to empower 2.5 million smallholder households through improved access to nutrition via Noiler farming. Today, as we reflect on the theme of inclusivity and equity, we call upon NGOs and philanthropists to join hands with us in this vital mission. Together, we can amplify our impact, reach more communities, and ensure that no one is left behind in the pursuit of better nutrition and food security. 🤝 Interested in partnering with us?
