Biodiversity Supervisor Nyaradzo Hoto is in charge of Akashinga’s reforestation project which will over the coming years provide both local communities and protected wildlife areas with more indigenous trees. Nyaradzo currently houses 20.000 trees in her tree-nursery in Phundundu, Zimbabwe, and the goal for next year is to expand to 100.000 trees. This project will help in both educating school children, prevent illegal logging, rehabilitate damaged ecosystems and mitigate climate change. 🌱🌳🇿🇼 Repost @wildhoodfoundation @weareakashinga #wildhoodfoundation #akashinga #climate #biodiversity #trees #treeplanting #zimbabwe

Primary forests play a critical role in #biodiversity conservation, carbon storage and sequestration, and other ecosystem services, as well as livelihoods support. At #COP16Colombia, IUCN and partners launched a GEF-funded project to protect tropical primary forests. The objective of the project is to prevent the loss of tropical primary forests worldwide by strengthening their protection and #conservation, which will in turn contribute to mitigating #climate change, preventing biodiversity loss and land degradation, and improving the livelihoods of the communities that depend upon them. WHY IT MATTERS: Climate change has significantly impacted big cats, threatening their survival and the ecosystems they inhabit. For example, cheetahs, known for their speed and agility, face heightened risks due to habitat loss and changing landscapes. Conservation efforts in Namibia, which involve debushing to create sustainable habitats, are underway to mitigate these effects and support the recovery of cheetah populations. [Source: Cheetah Conservation Fund] Additionally, big cats like tigers and jaguars serve as vital indicators of biodiversity health, highlighting the need for protected areas that ensure the survival of countless other species sharing these habitats. Happy #WorldEnvironmentday🌍🌿 Desertification, land degradation, and drought are a silent and invisible crisis that affects people and the environment at large. They are caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations, impacting negatively on the ecosystem, biodiversity and landscape. In Nigeria, land degradation is almost inescapable in some areas as human/ industrial activities such as poor waste management, mining, construction, overgrazing , deforestation, poor agricultural practices etc responsible for the degradation is commonly practiced over here which affects water resources, ecosystem and biodiversity. Climate changes also triggers the degradation of land making it vulnerable to disasters. Land restoration refers to any intentional activity that initiates or accelerates the recovery of an ecosystem from a degraded state. These activities should be practiced by us in a bid to curb this growing menace as rehabilitating degraded land through land restoration is key to enhancing biodiversity, restore ecosystem services, and mitigate climate change impacts. Activities like reforestation, land remediation, agroforestry, soil conservation, and the protection of natural processes are vital in land restoration as it aims to enhance biodiversity, restore ecosystem services, and mitigate climate change impacts. Through land restoration, it is possible to reinstate the land’s function to store carbon, to prevent droughts and floods and increase soil productivity. Restoration boosts livelihoods, lowers poverty and builds resilience to extreme weather. Restoring just 15 percent of land and halting further conversation could avoid up to 60 percent of expected species extinctions. Let us play our roles to make this a reality, HAPPY WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY!! #Generationrestoration #worldenvirommentday

🌲 International Rainforest Day 🌲 was celebrated on the 22nd of June. However, the importance of rainforests especially in the Amazon, Congo Basin and Papua to the climate, biodiversity and people cannot be underestimated. So we should celebrate the sacredness of these forests every blessed day! We should always celebrate the diversity of cultures and its importance in the protection of the world’s rainforests, as well as call attention to the need to have Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities at the center of conversations and decision-making spaces about resource allocation for biodiversity protection and restoration. It is important to highlight how Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities already have the solutions to prevent biodiversity loss and fight the climate crisis, and we must work with them to mobilise the resources they need and also stand with them to defend their rights and lives. #protectandrestorerainforests #standwithIPsandLCs https://lnkd.in/ghY3hA5J

The Tragedy of the Uncommons: Africa's Forgotten Environmental Crisis The tragedy of the uncommons refers to the neglect and degradation of unique and fragile ecosystems that are not considered "common" or widespread. In Africa, these uncommon ecosystems are facing unprecedented threats, from climate change to human activities. #TragedyOfTheUncommons #Africa #EnvironmentalCrisis Neglect and Degradation The uncommons are often overlooked in conservation efforts, leading to neglect and degradation. This can result in the loss of biodiversity, ecosystem disruption, and decreased ecosystem services. #Neglect #Degradation Unique Ecosystems Africa is home to many unique and fragile ecosystems, including: - The succulent karoo of South Africa - The mangrove forests of West Africa - The mountain ecosystems of Ethiopia #UniqueEcosystems #Africa Threats The uncommons face numerous threats, including: - Climate change - Human activities such as deforestation and pollution - Invasive species #Threats #ClimateChange Solutions To address the tragedy of the uncommons, it is essential to: - Increase awareness and recognition of these ecosystems - Implement conservation efforts tailored to these ecosystems - Support community-led conservation initiatives #Solutions #Conservation Conclusion The tragedy of the uncommons is a pressing environmental issue in Africa, requiring immediate attention and action. By working together, we can protect these unique and fragile ecosystems for future generations. #TragedyOfTheUncommons #Africa #EnvironmentalConservation

We cannot go back in time and undo the damage we caused, but we can revive water sources, bring back soils, and grow forests. Up to 40% of the planet's land is degraded that directly affects more that half of the world's population. With a changing climate, the occurrence of desertification and droughts are becoming more common and severe in certain parts of the world. CSA has been working in the Succulent Karoo—a biodiversity hotspot—to restore, protect and manage communal rangelands that in turn support food and climate security and biodiversity conservation. This supports and builds the resilience of the most vulnerable communities that depend on nature for their livelihoods but who also happen to be most hit by climatic impacts. 👇🏼Hear more from Malherbe Rossouw, CSA's Restoration Manager based in the Namakwa region. #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #OurLandOurFuture #GenerationRestoration

The natural estuaries are habitats of enormous importance for numerous fish species and birds. 🐟🦜They serve as nurseries for many marine life forms and provide protection from floods. However, these vital ecosystems are increasingly under threat. ‼️👫 According to a new study, almost half of all estuaries worldwide have been severely altered by human impact, and a significant proportion of these losses have only occurred in the last 35 years. It is particularly worrying that the greatest habitat losses are occurring in countries with strong economic development. This highlights the urgency of taking action to protect and restore these valuable habitats. Through targeted conservation measures, we can help to preserve biodiversity, keep ecosystems intact and mitigate the consequences of climate change. 🌿🌍 Let's act together to protect our estuaries! 🌊✊ Find out more at this link: https://lnkd.in/dhwaFg5k 📷: Nathan Anderson - unsplash.com #riverestuaries #environmentalprotection #conservation #species diversity #sustainability #biodiversity #marinehabitats #climateprotection #sustainablefisheries #fishfarming #riverprotection

🌍 Today is World Environment Day and we want to say a huge well done to our Forest Conservation team in Malawi and the 1,830 local volunteers who protect over 340 sq.km of forest. 🌳 Protecting trees is often harder than planting new ones, but these forests are vital in maintaining biodiversity as well as preventing landslides, flooding and of course, providing clean air. 💝 Many of the younger local volunteers have been inspired by their grandparents. When the grandparents were young, deforestation wasn't a problem and there were trees. 🙌 Their grandchildren are now motivated by their elders to protect what is left for the next generation. We are encouraging communities to protect land that is naturally regenerating too. 🌱 What else are we doing to help protect forests?
