Check out this new research led by Pennsylvania State University, published in Fire Ecology, where focus groups with fire managers across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland shed light on the barriers and opportunities for prescribed fire in the mid-Atlantic region. Interestingly, the study—supported by Guild staff—found that despite differing ecological and sociopolitical histories, there were few state-to-state differences. Fire managers consistently emphasized the need for landscape-level planning and relationship building. This reinforces the Guild's role as a connector across regions, a role that continues to be vital for effective land management nationwide. This recent study, born from a virtual workshop in 2021, proposes a paradigm shift in urban ecology. We argue for a focus on relationships rather than urban structures to better address rapidly changing global urban systems. This relational approach offers a more dynamic understanding of urban ecosystems, paving the way for adaptive and effective solutions to complex urban challenges. Full text: https://lnkd.in/gki5SHM9

Are you a landscape ecologist? Chances are if you’re reading this, the answer is yes. But what actually is landscape ecology? ialeUK says landscape ecology can be defined as “the study of interactions, across space and time, between the structure and function of physical, biological and cultural components of landscapes; marine, freshwater, and on land.” As such it focuses on the wider landscape, and explores how it all fits together. Reducing fragmentation and finding practical solutions to restoring connectivity where it is lost (e.g. planting hedgerows, expanding habitats, rewilding) are all inherently landscape ecological and reflect the practice element in what ialeUK stands for. Dr. David Warners, who teaches Restoration Ecology for Au Sable each summer, has released a new book titled Reconciliation in a Michigan Watershed. "Like many American urban waterways, Ken-O-Sha has been in decline for nearly two hundred years. In this provocative book, scholars and environmentalists Gail Gunst Heffner and David P. Warners explore the watershed’s ecological, social, spiritual, and economic history to determine what caused the damage, and describe more recent efforts to repair it." https://lnkd.in/eDZXGi5v

🛰 New research! 🛰 Excited to announce that my Master's research has been published in Remote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation #openaccess. We created a map of #peatlands and their sub-classes for the Canadian boreal forest using multi-sensor #remotesensing and #machinelearning. Additionally, we investigated class-wise and regional variations in peatland vegetation height using data from ICESat-2. The peatland map and PALSAR-2 mosaics are available as #opendata, which we hope will facilitate further research in wildfire management, ecology, carbon accounting, and more. 🚨 Over recent centuries we have lost large areas of the habitats that make up the seascape; including up to 92% per cent of seagrass meadows, 85% of saltmarsh habitats and 95% of native oyster reefs. This severe loss has left our coastal ecosystems fragmented and vulnerable to further degradation. To deliver a thriving healthy ocean, we need to apply the concept of landscape ecology, which has taken off across terrestrial restoration initiatives, and apply it to the nascent field of seascape scale restoration within our coastal habitats. Our new report, “Restoring our Seascapes: evidence and actions for coastal habitat restoration at scale” presents a series of recommendations to enable and accelerate whole scale seascape restoration and follows findings from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) symposium on ‘Ecological connectivity across temperate coastal habitats’ and is written in collaboration with the UK UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), University of Essex, University of Portsmouth and Zoological Society of London (ZSL). The time to restore Britain's 12,500km of coastline and support our marine environments to thrive once more is now Read the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTCGDyda Discover our three policy recommendations 👇 Thanks to Platform Earth for supporting this report. #Restoration #MarineRestoration #Policy #Seascape #NatureRecovery Aisling McGarrigle, Jennifer Murray, Dan Crockett, Prof Joanne Preston, Angus Garbutt, Graham J C Underwood

In our latest webinar, we at DORIS delved into the fascinating world of Human Ecology—a field that examines the complex interactions between people and their environments, especially in workspaces and educational settings. Rooted in our president's expertise from the School of Human Ecology at UW Madison, this approach is about understanding and optimizing these interactions to enhance well-being, productivity, and community. Human Ecology, in our context, is about creating ecosystems within our workplaces and institutions that are not only functional but nurturing and supportive of every individual's needs. It's the science and art of designing environments that truly understand and cater to the nuanced interplay of human dynamics. So, when we ask if you have a "Human Ecology Problem," we're essentially inquiring: Do your spaces foster the growth, productivity, and well-being they're supposed to? Intrigued? We invite you to find out by participating in a brief survey! Your insights will help us identify potential "Human Ecology" challenges in your environment and explore ways DORIS can guide you toward creating spaces where people can truly thrive. We often lose touch with the landscapes we inhabit. Covered in concrete, stores, and signage, we primarily see our humanness reflected in us. Urban ecology examines the intersections of our built environments with the landscapes they reside on. The human-nature relationship is constant. The question becomes, how do we design our relationships and interactions to be harmonious instead of harmful? A few weeks ago, I released my second episode on urban ecology, which now has almost 800 views on YouTube. You can find more information by heading to the link below to watch the full episode! https://lnkd.in/guzfcV5w #ecology #sustainability #climatescience #climatesolutions #landscapedesign #landscape
