Canada has made great strides in mass timber over the last decade, but the potential is even greater. With abundant resources, innovation, and a shift toward craftsmanship, scaling up is key. Together, we can make mass timber a cornerstone of low-carbon solutions.

Our Founder, Patrick Chouinard spoke at the Forest Products Association of Canada National Policy conference on #masstimber, #affordablehousing and #buildingwithwood back in September. He was joined on the panel by Mike Moffatt, Derek Eaton and Carol Phillips from Moriyama Teshima Architects. Carol captures our thoughts completely about the mass timber industry in the clip below where she says: "This moment in time is incredibly optimistic to change our whole attitude from a resource and extraction mentality to a manufacturing mentality, a making mentality, a craftsmanship mentality. I think that we have no choice. It's our only low-carbon solution and it's so Canadian." As in industry, mass timber has made great strides in North America, but we think the best is yet to come, as Patrick says: "We've come a long way. It's just a matter of time... Building in wood makes so much more sense. We just have to be patient, everyone has to work together and ultimately we'll get there."

"Major developers are expanding their use of timber in response to net-zero targets. About 25% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions come from man-made structures... and using more wood is one of the best ways to reduce them. Carbon storage is about 50% higher in timber-framed homes than in ones built with masonry; the figure can be as much as 400% higher for larger buildings that use engineered products such as cross-laminated timber." https://lnkd.in/eaqk3zag

Sweden is building a wooden city south of its capital Stockholm, and currently 14% of all new building projects in Sweden are made from wood. There are pros and cons to using wood, and the major problem with a wooden structure is the fire danger. Given many Governments intent to outlaw ICE car sales by 2035, and the proliferation of EV’s with Li-ion batteries, will add a new layer of fire hazard, especially for a wooden building. EV fires are intense, high-temperature fires and hard to extinguish. EV’s parked in building garages, will pose a serious fire danger for wooden apartment buildings. All building fires are dangerous, but a large multi-story wooden apartment building catching fire, will put many lives in danger, more than concrete building fires. Therefore, innovative measures and fire protection technologies should be considered and implemented into wooden building designs to counter fire danger, and specially EV fires. These measures could include building parking garages from different materials and locating it outside the building if possible. And, incorporating innovative fire safety/suppression technologies like AlazTech technology that include specifically designed mode to deal with electrical fires. Canada has lots of forest and every year millions of hectors of these valuable timber is burned to ash by wildfires. Perhaps, Canada can take a leaf from Sweden approach, and invest in protecting its forest and using its timber to build high-rise buildings. Canada by using a scientific and sustainable approach to timber harvesting, in similar manner to Sweden’s practice, can use its forest for job creation, rural development, and reducing its carbon foot-print due to reduction in cement use, and smarter forest management that will reduce its wildfire incidents. But for it to succeed, Canada has to invest in innovative fire protection and suppression technologies. One place to start is supporting AlazTech Inc., which has patented technology to deal with these particular fire types, among other things. AlazTech fire technology can deal with EV fires and wildfires more effectively than other fire technologies in market. https://lnkd.in/gaAyN5Tx

The industrial real estate market may not be top of mind when thinking about Palm Beach, FL. With only 40 MSF, Palm Beach County is the smallest industrial market out of 20 coastal port markets on the U.S. East Coast I-95 corridor, California and Pacific Northwest. The Port of Palm Beach is the smallest port on Florida's East Coast processing 2.5 million tons of cargo annually. However, as an export port (exports > imports), the Port is a critical hub in which the Bahamas and Caribbean Basin depend on to supply ~60% of the goods and products to the Islands. Located in Riviera Beach (~$17 PSF), the 165-acre Port's Master Plan calls for port-adjacent land acquisitions, berthing facility area redevelopment, increasing on-dock rail capacity and harbour and channel improvements necessary to address navigational constraints imposed by a tight Lake Worth Inlet entrance channel and relatively shallow depth of 33' prohibiting access for the largest vessels. Other key industrial submarkets in Palm Beach County include West Palm Beach (~$13.50 PSF), Lake Worth (~$24.50 PSF) and Boca Raton (~$15.50 PSF). Industrial activity in these submarkets represents the goods and commodities moving through the port including produce and food products, fuels, construction materials, bulk products, containerized and heavy project cargo. #ports #industrialrealestate #multimodaltransport #maritimelogistics #infrastructure #geography

#LessonsLearned: Treated timber is a must-have in South Africa's building industry. 🌳 When it comes to durability and longevity in your projects, treated timber plays a crucial role. South Africa's diverse climate, ranging from humid coastal areas to dry inland regions, exposes wooden structures to various environmental challenges. Choose treated timber for durability, longevity, and a sustainable approach to construction! 🌳✨ #BUCONorthEnd #BuildingPossibilities #LetsBuildTogether

Monaco's new district of Mareterra officially opens next month with some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Condos and villas designed by Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando and Lord Norman Foster built on new land created and claimed from the sea: pricing will go over $11,000/sf. Almost 100,000sf of solar panels, heat pumps to power all heating and cooling mechanisms, captured rainwater to irrigate plants and 1,000 newly planted trees are some of the eco-friendly features. And the area is income tax free too.... (FT)
