"In October 2023, the U.S. Economic Development Administration selected 31 ✨ #TechHubs ✨ designees from a pool of 379 applications, making them eligible for multi-year implementation awards. Now, the #EDA has provided implementation grants of between $19 million and $51 million to 12 consortia to execute their locally developed plans for achieving global economic prominence in a key industry within 10 years. Those funds will support focused cluster strategies, accelerate commercial scale-up, and develop the workforce of the future, all while achieving key national goals, such as securing America’s national security, strengthening its supply chain resilience, and improving #economic inclusion. As such, the new 🎉 awards stand out as especially prominent elements of the nation’s ongoing, multi-program drive in recent years to boost national economic development by leveraging what we call 'place-based industrial policy,' the idea that intentional efforts to unlock growth in new places represents a plausible strategy for boosting the nation’s technological advantages, global competitiveness, and #nationalsecurity. Given all of this, then, it is worth pausing to consider this week’s announcement and take a brief look at the nature of the awards (and the winning consortium organizers) as well as what’s next for the program. Here are three initial takeaways." 🔎 Read on! Mark Muro, Joe Parilla and Francesca Ioffreda for The Brookings Institution

I believe that Government funding to drive innovation is a vital initiative, for the US. However, I'm puzzled as to why this isn't structured as a public/private partnership model. The larger tech firms already have significant incubation funds that surpass the scale of this initiative. A Federally driven public/private partnership would create a more substantial impact and attract talent, ultimately motivating communities to evolve into technology-friendly markets. This approach could significantly enhance the development of local technology ecosystems. Federal government research spending is a story of geographic winners and losers. A great Thesis Driven article this week delves into the one of the fed's latest efforts to boost growth from the ground up: the NSF and Commerce Department's Emerging Innovation Engines program: a CHIPS act-funded initiative that will seed ten regions across the country in their efforts to become innovation hubs for research, tech commercialization, and workforce development. It's quite similar to another of the Commerce Department's initiatives: the Tech Hubs program, also CHIPS acted-funded and also focused on identifying regional centers primed for tech innovation and job creation. Late last year, Baltimore earned one of the coveted 'Tech Hubs' distinctions (one of 31 out of nearly 400 applicants) making it eligible to receive a share of $500m in initial implementation funding to be announced this summer ($10b in total is earmarked for the program over the next five years). The takeaway here for real estate investors is, of course, to follow the (federal grant) money. I'm an unabashed Baltimore evangelist, perhaps at times taking a too-rosy view of my adopted home; however, Brad Hargreaves makes an excellent argument about why federal investment at the local level can have outsized impact. Baltimore is a geographically strategic city with a strong healthcare and biotech ecosystem buttressed by one of the top research universities in the country. I remain bullish on this great American city. Here's just another reason to join me. https://lnkd.in/eEFk4t8y #realestate #baltimore #innovationengines #techhubs

"Authorized by President Biden’s CHIPS and Science Act, the Tech Hubs program brings together companies, state, local, and Tribal governments, institutions of higher education, labor unions, and nonprofit organizations around a common vision for regional economic growth. These Tech Hubs will ensure that the benefits of innovation and technology development, which for too long have been concentrated in a few coastal cities, reach rural, industrial, and disadvantaged communities, growing regional economies from the bottom-up and the middle-out. Tech Hubs are a flagship example of the President’s place-based approach; emphasizing that America’s economy is stronger when we invest in communities rather than leave them behind. ... Today’s (2 July 2024) announcement will designate 12 winners of implementation grants of up to $51 million each to help accelerate and grow industries in these regions. These awardees span 14 states: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin." Today, the U.S. Economic Development Administration announced Tech Hubs Phase II funding: https://lnkd.in/ei6d_4bp A total of $504 million in funding was announced for 12 Tech Hubs. The South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub, led by Miami-Dade County, gets $19.5 million for novel sustainable, durable, resilient, infrastructure; workforce development; start-up support, among other topics. Of this, ~$2.3 million goes to the University of Miami, led by me at the University of Miami College of Engineering and Michael Berkowitz at the University of Miami Climate Resilience Academy. For the sustainable, durable, resilient infrastructure project, we collaborate with Florida International University, Carbon Limit, Titan America, among others. Some more links: https://lnkd.in/eD22tpAa https://lnkd.in/eSuywGN6 Francesca de Quesada Covey, Galen Treuer, Jenn Baez, Michael Berkowitz, Landolf Rhode-Barbarigos, Norma Kenyon, Joanna de Velasco, Pratim Biswas, Tim Sperry, Jitendra Jain, Christina Stavridi, Emily Furton, William Anderson, Eric Koehler, Nima Hosseinzadeh, Ph.D. and I'm sure I'm forgetting many others. Edit: I posted this pretty quickly and I think I glossed over how big of a win this is for the region. The way it is designed, this opportunity will create jobs, educate, and advance materials/technology far beyond what $19.5 million would usually do. I say this because we will foster partnerships and raise a lot more money and resources that the $19.5 million will seed. I truly think that this is a transformational, once in a lifetime opportunity.

Last week the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Agency, led by Secretary Gina Raimondo, announced the Tech Hub finalists, https://lnkd.in/g5ZrHP2e This represents an important economic development 'game-changer' for the cities, states and regions awarded. These 'innovation hubs' will become epicenters of economic development attracting businesses and creating new ones, advancing research, providing educational resources and most importantly, attracting and retaining talent. Similar to well-known hubs such as Silicon Valley, each of these has the opportunity to develop into a global epicenter in their respective area. The seeds are planted.... #techhubs #economicdevelopment #innovation
