As we gather this holiday season, it’s a time to celebrate connection and gratitude—but for many young men who have aged out of foster care, this season can also be a reminder of their challenges. At 2nd Mountain Homes, we’re dedicated to providing a safe and supportive space for these resilient individuals to build brighter futures. For those navigating life without a traditional support system, the holidays can bring feelings of isolation. That’s why 2nd Mountain Homes exists—to create a sense of community, purpose, and hope. We offer stable housing, mentorship, and life skills training tailored to the unique needs of at-risk male youth. With personalized care and a compassionate team, we’re helping young men take their next steps toward independence and success. This Holiday Season, we’re grateful for the opportunity to make a difference—and for the supporters like you who make our mission possible. Together, we can extend the spirit of the season by empowering those who need it most. If you’d like to learn more about our work or ways to get involved, we’d love to hear from you: 📧 info@thehemalliance.org Let’s make this season one of gratitude, growth, and giving back.

October 19: Write Your Own Story As a foster youth alum, I know firsthand that your past does not define your future. You have the power to write your own story, to shape your life in ways that reflect your strength and resilience. This October, I encourage you to build connections that lift you up. Over 50% of foster youth report feeling disconnected from family or community support (Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, 2019). But you don’t have to walk this journey alone. Together, we can create a community of support and belonging. Your story is still being written—let’s make it one of growth and connection. #FosterYouthAlum #WriteYourOwnStory #StrengthInCommunity #Resilience #FosterCareSupport #BuildingConnections #EmpowerFosterYouth #YourStoryMatters #CommunitySupport #FosterCareAwareness

Legacy Wednesday! What kind of care do you want to have available for Olders in 20 years? How do you hope to be supported in your older years? There will be 12 million folks over the age of 65 in Canada by 2051. That is only 26 years away. The numbers climb every day from the roughly 7 million there are now. We do not yet have adequate spaces, living arrangements, care, or community connection to make sure good quality of life comes along with the aging population. The time to collaborate is now. We are adding to the processes of intergenerational connection, social inclusion, and building community now. This is so very important. Reach out for info on how you can join us! What kind of legacy do we want to create for Older care; medically, socially, emotionally, physically, and mentally. Being Human During my foster carer assessment, I repeatedly heard the phrase: "You are such a good person." Each time, my response was the same: "No, I wouldn’t describe myself as a good person. I see myself as a human being." To me, kindness and care shouldn’t be extraordinary—they should be common sense. Treating others with dignity, empathy, and respect should be the baseline, not the exception. I often reflect on how small, overlooked issues can grow into national or even global problems when left unaddressed. Neglect, isolation, and lack of compassion can spiral into much larger societal challenges. But the reverse is also true: small acts of humanity create ripples of positive change. If we all made the simple choice to treat each other as human beings, without conditions or exceptions, the world would be far less acrimonious. What do you think? Have you ever had a moment where an everyday act of humanity made a real difference? #Humanity #Compassion #FosterCare #KindnessMatters #SmallActionsBigImpact

Got questions about fostering? We’ve got answers! Today we’re addressing an important topic: Can you foster a child from a different cultural background? Absolutely, you can foster a child from a different race. Diversity in foster care is essential and offers enriching experiences for both the child and the foster family. However, it's important to approach this responsibility with sensitivity and a willingness to learn. When fostering a child from a different cultural background: Embrace Cultural Competence: Understand and respect the child’s cultural background, including their traditions, language, and customs. Promote Identity and Heritage: Help the child maintain a connection to their cultural roots by incorporating cultural practices and connecting with community groups. Educate Yourself: Learn about issues related to race and cultural diversity to navigate challenges and provide support. Encourage Open Dialogue: Foster open conversations about race and identity, allowing the child to express their feelings freely. Fostering across racial lines can be a deeply rewarding experience that broadens your perspective and enriches your family’s life. Reach out to us today for codependency training and get a 10% discount if you book ahead for October 2024. #fostering #fostercare #fosteringmoments

June is National Reunification Month, and this year, 47% of children experiencing foster care will reunite with their family this year. That's a fact worth CELEBRATING! 👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾 But while we celebrate, we also can't ignore the other side of it. Because today, in the United States, there are over 100,000 children and youth experiencing foster care who are waiting for permanency. For these children and youth, reunification is no longer the goal-- and instead, finding permanency in another way is. This can look like adoption, guardianship, or kinship care. But too often, it looks like being moved from home to home, from placement to placement, and experiencing disruption after disruption. It looks like being separated from siblings, moving school districts, and being unable to become fully involved in sports and clubs and youth groups and activities because a random move is always possible, and always anticipated. It looks like eating turkey at Thanksgiving with one family and waking up Christmas morning with a new one. For 100,000+ children and youth, that's their reality. A reality that needs changed. In order for us to make a change, we need to be the change. So let's be the change. #fosterthefamily #fosterthefamilyus #thisisfostercare #fostercare #fostercaresupport

National Families Week is an important celebration in Australia, dedicated to acknowledging the vital role that families play in our communities and to raising awareness of the issues that families face today. This year, from May 13 to 19, we are invited to reflect on the theme "Celebrating Family Diversity and Connections," a theme that resonates deeply in our increasingly multicultural and diverse society. Celebrating National Families Week can take many forms, all of which contribute to recognising and appreciating the diversity and complexity of family life in Australia. Here are some ideas for families: 📚 Family Storytelling Nights: Host an evening where family members share stories from different generations or cultural backgrounds. This fosters an understanding of family history and the diverse journeys that have shaped your family. 👨👩👦 Community Picnics or Gatherings: Organise or participate in community events that bring together families of all kinds. These can be great for networking, sharing experiences, and simply enjoying time together in a local park or community centre. 🎨 Art Projects: Engage in family-themed art projects that allow members to express what family means to them. This could be a collaborative mural, a video project, or a photo collage celebrating your family’s diversity #gowriensw #earlychildhood #earlychildhoodeducation #earlyeducation #preschool #childhood #teachers #educators #earlychildhoodeducator #earlychildhooddevelopment #play #nationalfamiliesweek #diversity #familydiversity #familyconections #family #celebratingdiversity
