As citizens of our great Nation, we all share a responsibility to uphold the principles of free and fair elections. NIHG strongly condemns today's assassination attempt on former President Trump. This is now the second attempt on his life. Recent concerning events remind us of the critical need to reject violence and inflammatory rhetoric in our political discourse, regardless of party affiliation or ideological beliefs. A healthy nation thrives on the open exchange of ideas, respectful debate, and the peaceful transition of power. When we resort to extreme language or actions, we undermine the very foundations of our democratic system. Let's recommit ourselves to: 1. Engaging in constructive dialogue 2. Respecting the electoral process 3. Condemning violence and threats in all forms 4. Supporting the rule of law By fostering a culture of civic responsibility and mutual respect, we can work towards a safer, more stable society for all. Our differences should be resolved at the ballot box, not through intimidation or force. I encourage everyone to reflect on how we can contribute to a more civil and productive political environment. The election is over, and the results are in. One party emerged victorious because their message resonated with the values and priorities of the majority. While it’s important to acknowledge the outcome, we must also remember that we all vote based on our personal beliefs — and those can differ. We each voted according to our values and priorities, just as others did. In a democracy, that’s what matters: the freedom to choose and the respect for others' right to do the same. This is America, where we are fortunate to have our voices heard. Whether your party won or lost, it's okay to feel pride or disappointment. What’s not okay is attacking those who hold different views. Can't stop, won't stop. Your Local Government Evangelist is doubling down on civics. NH Together, a project of The People, is meeting all weekend at St. Anselm College for the state's very first "Citizens Assembly." Some universal issues have been identified since September 2023: 1. Reducing polarization 2. Improving political responsiveness by our representatives in government. 3. Strengthening voter confidence in elections I'll be volunteering on the rapid response Theme Team, synthesizing discussion feedback into general themes. By the end of the weekend, the assembly will have drafted some policy recommendations around these issues for the state legislature to consider.
