Managing Partner @ Accelerate Africa | Investor and Consigliere to African founders
A lot of people ask me to personally invest in their startup and the answer is typically no because by virtue of very tight agreements I am actually not allowed to invest personally in any startup outside of Future Africa.
But can I let you in on a personal secret? Getting into Accelerate Africa increases your chances of being directly funded by Future Africa by roughly 10% which considering we fund less than 0.1% of all proposals we receive is actually quite a lot..
Apply to Accelerate Africa today and even if we don’t fund you - you can walk away with a plan to build a $1m dollar revenue business that I will personally help you start executing on. The website remains : www.acceler8.africa
Deadline is in 4 days on September 13, 2024

Looking forward to discussing strategies for success with co-panellists and meeting other amazing entrepreneurs and innovators.
See you!
How can African startups balance agility with accountability as we navigate the second half of 2024?
This burning question was the central theme of our SOTIA H1 2024 live launch event last Friday. Our incredible panel moderated by Nubi Kay', (Startup programs lead Paystack), included:
◻ Christine Namara (Partner, Flat6labs' Africa Seedfund)
◻Matthew Davis (Co-CEO, Renew Capital)
◻'Tola Onayemi (CEO, Norebase)
◻Oluwatamilore Sowunmi (Associate, Aluko & Oyebode)
Their diverse perspectives shed light on the ecosystem's "growing pains" – a crucial phase that demands a rethinking of corporate governance practices and procedures.
These insights aren't just food for thought – but a call to action for everyone invested in Africa's tech future.
Here are some quotes that sum up the session 👇 Want to learn more about the numbers behind these trends?

Although my business and life are at capacity/overflowing I could not resist joining Luke Mostert and Karl Nchite at CatalyzeU.
It is a common belief that gold, diamonds and minerals are Africa's largest resource. In 2024 Africa's most powerful resource is this unique younger generation who are educated, ambitious, creative and resilient. The problem is the lack of opportunities at home. Catalyze U thesis of doing training to be placed in Good jobs with a future based in USA or Europe (remotely) is timely.. I believe in CatalyzeU, their founders and most of all their mission. As I approach 70, every young African's life I can improve will become my legacy. I am confident I will be an integral part of this powerful mission.

We’re thrilled to welcome Steven Freidmutter as both an Investor and Strategic Advisor of CatalyzU.
Steven comes with decades of experience in both US and African tech, founding SF Ventures, which has invested as an LP in funds, such as Launch Africa, and in dozens of startups globally. His rich experience means he’s frequently requested on boards and as a strategic advisor, and through our conversations – we saw why.
Steven was kind enough to share the following quote:
“At 69, although my plate is overflowing, the ambitious CatalyzU Founders made a solid case for our alignment to complete this collaboration. We are of firm conviction that the future of the global workforce is African and that CatalyzU can be that vital bridge" 💬

"Charles, don't go for a MBA. Found a startup instead, save time and money." -- Anonymous (sorry, forgot who told me this).
This makes me think a lot about education, where I took that advice. (Year 9 of startup business school, no degree yet, but not flunked out yet.) I've always looked up to VCs; they feel like the professors of the startup world. And the ones that I've connected with best, and have been the most helpful and influential, have usually been founders themselves.
One thing we're working on at CoderSchool is finding ways to discover and empower more people to teach. I doubt many VCs think of themselves as teachers, but teaching founders is absolutely a major part of what they do. And we in turn teach our teams and each other. (If you want to learn anything about LLMs or B2B sales, talk to Jonathan Viet Pham of Diaflow, on my left. Or if you want to learn about personal branding and marketing, you should definitely talk to Kate Nguyen of Melab, on my right.)
Big thanks to Aditya, former founder, who organized this lunch in a very founder-friendly way. Just like a good class, it was small and intimate and impactful and full of other cool people.
(p.s. No shade on people with MBAs, I'm 7 years behind and still struggle to read a balance sheet. Help me.)

The energy and vibes in the #Vietnam startup ecosystem are simply inspiring. There’s a tremendous amount of talent, work ethic, resilience and drive, all working together to become the engine of the country's economic transformation 🇻🇳
I had the privilege of joining an insightful luncheon with founders from across the ecosystem, where apart from exchanging personal journeys we had open discussions on key topics like the support infrastructure for startups, nurturing entrepreneurship, building investment partnerships, and lessons learned along the way.
A special thank you to all the founders - Jonathan Viet Pham, Charles, Kate, Nguyen Kim Anh, Nam Dinh, Trường Phan & Sang Do - who took the time to share their experiences and perspectives. Their passion and determination are setting the stage for Vietnam's rise as a key player in Southeast Asia’s next wave of entrepreneurship.
At FEBE Ventures, we strongly believe that Vietnam is truly a country to watch! 🚀
Happy National Day to all my new and old Swedish connections celebrating tomorrow 🇸🇪🥳 To mark the occasion, I wanted to share some stats and facts about the Swedish startup ecosystem:
🚀 Swedish startups have a total valuation of 239 billion euros.
🚀 Sweden has produced 41 unicorns.
🚀 Last year, Swedish startups drew in 4.7 billion euros in VC investments.
🚀 74 percent of the Swedish investments went to impact companies.
🚀🌏 Stockholm ranks first globally for climate tech funding.
🚀 Sweden is the 4th most most important European start up ecosystem.
🇸🇪🤝🇬🇧 Swedish companies have created nearly 23,400 jobs in the UK in the last decade – out of which 3,500 in London.
Quite impressive, I'd say! I hope to help even more Swedish companies grow in London in the coming years 🥳🇸🇪🇬🇧
P.S. Did I miss anything? And what would you say is the best thing about the Swedish startup ecosystem? 🤔
