🌍 **The Shadow of the Pandemics** 🌪️ Regrettably, the pandemic has impacted us in both visible and invisible ways. First COVID-19, now MPox, and surely there will be another in the future. We must accept the reality that our lives, our scientific endeavors, and our meticulously crafted plans have been and will all be shaped by the pandemic. It is all sadness that I read about the postponement of one of the conferences I eagerly follow. This is a reminder that, in the face of uncertainty, we must remain adaptable and resilient. Let us continue to support each other and fight in the realm of public health. Earlier this year, on February 17 -18, African heads of state met in Addis Ababa for the 37th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Summit calling for bold actions on health and universal health coverage (UHC). This convention clearly shows that African leaders recognize the importance of UHC for the continent and the necessity to set strategic objectives to achieve this by 2030. But, despite bold actions, the situation in Africa remains dire: 615 million individuals – about half of the continent’s population – do not receive the healthcare services they need. And about 97 million people face catastrophic health care costs when paying for health services.2 These are not just numbers; they represent the daily struggle of billions worldwide who are denied the right to health, well-being and dignity. This includes women and girls who have been hit the hardest by recent infectious outbreaks or climate change-related events. - UHC2030 - Taking action for universal health coverage Even with these statistics, all hope is not lost. With timelines still in place, stakeholders continue to hasten and tighten their reigns on achieving UHC and Health Security in Africa.
