Marja Innanen and I were part of the World Benchmarking Alliance event on embedding private sector accountability into the #GlobalDigitalCompact.  While over 50% of the world still lacks internet access (UNDP), the digital economy races ahead. Even more striking, over 250 million children worldwide lack access to the basic infrastructure needed for education (UNICEF). Charging forward without ensuring everyone has the essentials? I believe that’s a recipe for deeper inequalities. And let’s be honest—governments can’t fix this alone, and neither can the private sector. Siloed approaches must go. The evening was spectacular, with fantastic speakers, but here’s a snippet that resonated with me: Rebecca MacKinnon, Vice President for Advocacy at the Wikimedia Foundation, provided a powerful perspective: Wikimedia, one of the largest sources for training AI, depends on countless individuals contributing to the public interest. The digital world isn't just built by big tech; it thrives on contributions from all corners—especially from those ensuring the free flow of information. Gerbrand Haverkamp of the World Benchmarking Alliance didn’t mince words: "It’s those most impacted by companies that have the least influence over them." The world’s biggest telcos connect 6.6 billion people, yet their engagement is often top-down. It’s time corporations rethink how we engage with those most affected by our actions— and are held accountable. So what’s the point of this and the connection to what we do and why we were invited? Thank you for asking. At the end of the day, whether we’re creating classrooms or debating AI ethics, the goal is the same: creating spaces—both physical and digital—that empower people, protect their rights, and give them the best chance to thrive. Our spaces are essential, sometimes lifelines, for building resilient social infrastructure—schools, healthcare facilities, and community spaces that adapt to the changing needs of the people we serve.
