I appreciate the focus on communication, follow-ups, and buffers. These are indeed the "bread and butter" of proposal management. However, setting clear boundaries is often the hardest and least discussed part of the job. Boundaries can be tough to enforce, as they need stakeholder buy-in, and management doesn’t always prioritize them. Yet, they are crucial to prevent burnout, scope creep, and missed deadlines—outcomes we can’t afford. The key is to approach boundary-setting as a collaborative effort. It’s not about saying “no,” but aligning expectations and showing how boundaries benefit everyone. By framing them as tools for delivering quality within realistic limits, you’re more likely to gain leadership’s support. Striking a balance between proactive follow-up and firm boundaries is what separates a good proposal manager from a great one. Done well, it empowers both you and your team to succeed.
