Seeking representatives from diverse Indigenous & Indigenous Ally organizations and institutions across Alberta willing to take on an advisory role as a part of our Indigenous Studies Diploma Program Advisory Committee. About the Indigenous Studies Diploma Program: More than a program, Indigenous Studies strives to be a community centered in Indigenous culture, community, and relationships – to self, one another, the land and our more than human relatives. Authentic, meaningful, and purposeful Indigenous community centered land-based learning experiences are at the heart of our curriculum. Through the intentional interweaving of scholarly academic endeavors with Indigenous community service, engagement and relational networks of support, we challenge conventional contemporary notions of teacher, text and classroom. Students, Faculty, Staff, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Cultural advisors, together strive to create a learning environment grounded in a culture of inclusion and belonging where we all can walk and learn alongside one another, with and from community and the land. In an ever-changing world, now more than ever, it is essential to reclaim, restore, establish, build, maintain, preserve, and nurture ties to traditional ways of knowing, ways of being, ways of doing. It is through the revitalization and implementation of traditional land-based community centered principles and practices that the solutions to contemporary societal challenges can be found. It is up to the combined collaborative efforts of community leaders, families, Elders, cultural advisors, knowledge keepers, administrators, educators, and support staff to equip our program learners with the tools, experience, skills and knowledge required to tackle and overcome these challenges with confidence in themselves and their community. Education and the authentic interweaving and blending of traditional Indigenous ways of knowing with contemporary western education practices is the way forward. Courses in our program are designed with this in mind. Your contributions as a Program Advisory Committee Member: Your insight and expertise in community are incredibly valuable. As we plan for the future of our Indigenous Studies Diploma Program, I am requesting the gift of your time to share your knowledge and experience with us, to help us shape and guide the direction of the program so that we may uplift our communities in meaningful and purposeful ways. Annual meetings take place in the Fall or Winter term, typically lasting between 2-3 hours. If you have questions, would like additional information, or are interested and available, please email an expression of interest outlining who you are, your connections to Indigenous communities to Jeanien.bell@norquest.ca, on or before November 30th, 2025.

As someone who works at #LaTrobeUniversity, I strongly believe in equitable access to education. Amid the ongoing #costoflivingcrisis and a need to develop the skills and knowledge to tackle our nation’s social, economic and environmental challenges, the importance of the La Trobe Scholarship Fund has never been clearer. The demand for #scholarships remains high, with applications for Semester 2 more than doubling compared to last year. We know that scholarships have a profound impact on academic success, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Evidence suggests that scholarships effectively reduce the impacts of educational disadvantage on student achievement and retention. I urge anyone to consider a tax-deductible gift to the #LaTrobeScholarshipFund. Your support can change lives, just like it did for #Orthoptics student Tamanah. Proud to have contributed to the OECD report The Geography of Higher Education in England and Wales as part of the Operational Group. The UK has pioneered Civic Universities over the last decade; university leaders adopting Civic University Agreements, evolving those into interregional networks, and launching their National Civic Impact Accelerator. As universities face unjust criticism for a lack of societal engagement, it's crucial we continue building new pathways to connect with those left behind. This report offers valuable insights for universities in Europe, particularly those working on institutional transformation as part of European University Alliances. My key takeaways include: - Integrate civic missions into mid-term strategic goals of universities and university alliances to address societal challenges, and make sure to report on the actions, outcomes and lessons learned. - Foster and sustain strong partnerships with local governments to boost regional innovation ecosystems. Be conscious of leadership cycles, effectively off-board and on-board public and university leaders. - Promote co-creation of research and teaching with local needs to enhance both regional and pan-European impact. Offer spaces for engagement and recognise and rewards research and teaching staff for their efforts. 🚀 New report "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀" Explore the recently launched OECD - OCDE study on the linkages between higher education institutions (HEIs) and their places across England and Wales, and the key role of the National Civic Impact Accelerator. 🔎 Key Takeaways 🟢 HEIs are increasingly being called upon to play a vital role and contribute to addressing societal challenges in their surrounding communities. 🟢 Integrating a territorial dimension in research, innovation and engagement agendas of HEIs continues to be challenging. 🟢 The report offers recommendations to better align the higher education agenda with regional needs, leveraging the role of the NCIA. Hey Australian universities and equity practitioners! Do you want to know how effective an equity-focused intervention is? The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (formerly NCSEHE), through the Equity Frontiers Program, is funding trials to test the effectiveness of interventions designed to improve higher education access and success for students who are historically under-represented in Australian higher education. Applications for funding are NOW OPEN, and can be made at any time by submitting an Expression of Interest (EoI). Applicants identify and describe the intervention rather than the trial methods in this initial application stage. The Equity Frontiers Program Guidelines make clear the selection criteria, focused on the intervention and its potential to impact policy and practice, relevance to the equity sector, scalability, and evaluability. The EoI application and guidelines are here:

This is an important acknowledgement from the University of Manitoba. I also hope this serves as the beginning of a broader conversation about decolonizing informed consent and ethics processes in academia and academic research that must honour people we work with, their customs, their ways of being, their agency, autonomy, self-determination, and are trauma informed as opposed to (in some instances) bureaucratic mechanisms for consideration of just legal liability of institutions rooted in euro-centric approaches. I look forward to many discussions on the topic over the months and years to come. #traumaawareness #informedconsent #impactassessment
Today was a heavy and important day for our university. UM has formally apologized for the actions of its community members who, starting in the 1890s, desecrated Indigenous graves and mishandled their remains. And over the past 130 years, UM has also accepted stewardship of Indigenous Ancestors and belongings and we taught with, displayed and studied these ancestral remains and belongings without consent from First Nations, Inuit and Métis families, communities and Nations. We dehumanized Indigenous Peoples to justify our behavior and failed to recognize their sovereignty and dignity. The University of Manitoba did not live up to its ideals in their true form and today we apologized for these past wrongs and atone for these failures. This university wants to be in the right relationship with Indigenous communities of Turtle Island and we are committed to transforming our institution so that we can truly be a university for Manitoba. https://lnkd.in/erRsvAuY

A little over a year ago I was able to participate in what would be the very last The University of Texas at Austin sanctioned Latinx graduation. I never knew a graduation ceremony held in a gymnasium would make me feel thankful and lucky, to be part of the 8% of Latinas to hold a graduate degree. Texas Senate Bill 17 eroded so many amazing opportunities, organizations and over 60 staff member and or professors who were laid off by overcompliance of SB 17. The dismantling of cultural graduation ceremonies and the multicultural engagement center at public universities in Texas have created a resilience in Texas students that SB 17 cannot break. In less than six months students and organizer were able to find funds in order to continue the survival of the Latinx graduation in spite of the The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Julissa Muñiz, PhD: keynote speech shined a light for why cultural graduations are essential. “The reality of some getting to a place like UT can sometimes be jarring and overwhelming especially after almost two years of social isolation. Institutions sometimes have a way of making us feel like we don’t belong especially when you look around there aren’t many people who look like you, sound like you, or have experienced the things like you have. Still I want to remind you that you have always belonged and it’s on institutions to change not you. The reality is that you every single one of you is carving out a wider and more equitable path for those behind you not just in your family but for the nearly 3.6 million Latinx kids under the age of 18 growing up in Texas who may one day want to follow in your footsteps.
