🧗🏼 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗢𝗔𝗞 “𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵" We often hear about the notorious growth funding gap also known as the "Valley of Death" in startup financing, but I now understand it hits differently when we're talking about scaling up first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects 🏗️💸 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲: Deeptech startups must scale from lab to industrial size, yet: ❌ Venture capitalists typically can't fund large-scale infrastructure projects, which easily require €20M - €60M. ⚠️ Infrastructure developers have the capital but are wary of the risks associated with such innovative ventures. It's a classic catch-22: there's money, but it's not reaching the most important projects. For a clear picture, take a look at the Sightline Climate (CTVC) FOAK guide (link in the comments). 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? It’s all about getting creative with the capital stack. Industry experts like those behind the Climate Hardware Playbook (shoutout Planet A Ventures, Speedinvest, Norrsken VC) suggest a balanced approach: 1/3 equity, 1/3 grants, and 1/3 debt. But, the varied nature of deeptech means there's no one-size-fits-all solution. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜'𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱: Every deeptech company I've spoken with has tailored their financing in unique ways, from 100% debt to intricate customer partnerships.
