Last week was incredible as I had the opportunity to be a part of a jury that evaluated some of the most promising Startups in the country. This was during Latitude59 ‘s second ever event in Nairobi. A huge success with over 1600 attendees. Congratulations to Liisi OrgKaspar KitsingKerttu-Liis Klaar and the whole Latitude team for a great event !!
Representing French Tech Nairobi , I awared 3 tickets to next year’s edition of EMERGING Valley , in Marseille . The winners of the award include : Gatwĩri Njogu-Mokaya of VunaPay , Lucy Kimani of Noma, and Peter N. Kironji of Twiva .
To more collaborations !
“There are only two things you can’t do online in Estonia: get married or get divorced,” That was the third thing that Daniel Schaer, Estonia’s ambassador-at-large for economic cooperation in Africa, said to me when we met in Cape Town a few years ago.
The second was about a wooden bow tie, but that's not what this is about.
Estonia is a marvel. Not only is the government fully online, but the country of just 1.355mn people has produced as many unicorns as the entire African continent. The country has 1 startup for every 1, 000 people, and now plans to have 25 unicorns by 2025.
And it is passing some of that magic around with Latitude59's Pitch Competition next month.

In this period of emergencies and multiple crises, some of us don't loose contact with the long-term challenges: Igniting, supporting and investing in #Bluetech solutions.
The Israeli National Center of Blue Economy was born two years ago out of Israel’s commitment to sustainable ocean management.
After becoming the world champion of water economy, the Israeli academia, startups and industry are tackling now the #marine environment.
Their yearly event will take place like last year in Haifa, will host international speakers and participants around topics such as #Bluefinance#Sustainable#Ports and #Shipping#BlueAI#Ocean#Robotics.
I'll have the pleasure to speak about our recent investment in CarbonBlue and exchange on the ways to optimize #desalination, while managing #carbon and #energyconsumption in the industrial process. Why it is so important to address now the Ocean-Water/Energy Nexus.
We'll talk about trends in #maritime transportation and minimizing specific cargo impacts.
What has an Investor to look for in Israel? Well, an ocean of possibilities...

📚 Our story with Barcelona has definitely been a love one: the city is home to Factorial and Exoticca, two of Kfund’s shining starts; as well as emerging champions such as Abacum and many more.
🤝 This move is a testament of our commitment to the city’s thriving tech ecosystem: we are here to find the most outstanding entrepreneurs wanting to build the companies of tomorrow from such astonishing hub.
🤩 As a personal reflection, I want to share my (very biased) top 24 “rising stars” — young, pre-series A startups from Barcelona that I believe are bound to shape the Spanish and European tech landscape. Plus, some thoughts on the state of Barcelona and its promising-looking future!
P.S.: there is so much more tech talent to this that I cannot share yet (Stealth is the new cool) but these times are quite exciting at the Barceloneta!

We’re excited to announce that Margarita Khartanovich, Head of Startup Services, will be speaking at France Digitale Day (FDDay) in Paris on September 18! 🇫🇷
Margarita will be moderating a panel on resilience alongside industry leaders like Caroline Evans de Gantès (AVIV France), Chris Bourdeu (byrd), Rebecca N. (WeWork), and Laura Connell (Atomico). The panel will dive into what it really means to be resilient in today’s fast-paced world, sharing insights from their industries and discussing how businesses can adapt and thrive in uncertain times.
At Startup.Tampere, we know a thing or two about resilience. Our founders and startups have faced their fair share of challenges and come out stronger, which makes this panel especially relevant. We believe in sharing those lessons and learning from others across the European ecosystem.
If you’re attending FDDay, don’t miss the chance to connect with Margarita! Whether you’re a startup, investor, or ecosystem builder, drop her a message and meet up to discuss how we can work together to support innovation and growth.

Great session this week by our creative director, Mick Mooney, on the Essential Art of Presenting. Here's Mick's top insights from the presentation:
Some of the key insights shared included:
😎 The more patterns the audience recognises, the more likely they will let their brains run on autopilot. People have been in countless presentations. That equates to a huge amount of pattern recognition. You need to scramble these patterns to help them reset and have a more active attitude. Start with icebreakers that are fresh and different to the norm. Get people moving. Aim to evoke emotion in your audience to draw them into a more active decision-making mindset.
😎 Presentation success is defined by 'connection, not completion'. It's not about getting through all your slides. It's about how successful you were in making a connection with your audience.
😎 Metaphors are the single greatest communication tool you can use to make your message easily understood and sticky in the minds of your audience. When planning your presentation, ask yourself, can I use a metaphor to explain this complex idea/point?
😎 Use stories to reinforce the ideas and metaphors you use. If you introduce a metaphor, think of what personal story you can share that brings more context to the point and helps build rapport with the audience. Stories help people feel they like, know, and trust you a little bit more (and as a result, will feel a little bit more inclined to do business with you).
😎 Be brave. This comes back to the 'connection, not completion' focus. If you want to connect with an audience, you have to really put yourself into your presentation, focus on connection, feel when it's working, and also feel when it's not! The better you get at feeling the connection in the room, the stronger a presenter you will become over time.
😎 Finally, adopt the mindset that your slides are not the presentation; YOU are the presentation. How you turn up matters more than how fancy your slides look. Your energy, intentions, and how you engage, connect, and lead the room are what people will remember.
🙄 There were some other essential insights into the art of presenting, but I'm about to run out of room in this post! Thanks again to everyone who attended and to those who are already putting into practice what they learned. That's a great outcome.
I just wrapped up a great afternoon speaking at the Australian Technologies Competition in Sydney on the Essential Art of Presenting.
It was great to share some insights and stories with some incredible startups/scale ups in the tech space.
I brought along some of the crew from Scale Up Media so I'm sure we'll share some video snapshots of the event soon.
Big shout out to Giles Bourne and the team for inviting me add some value to a day already jam packed with value.
How to represent and improve a startup ecosystem!📊
Italy, as we know, is an emerging geography when it comes to startups, which does not benefit from particular experience or maturity in the sector, nor from a wealth of capital, despite having a lot of potential. And this is both a problem and an opportunity, which must be solved both to mitigate the negative consequences generated by the problem and to enjoy the positive ones of its hypothetical resolution.💡
And usually, to solve such complex problems, it can be helpful to represent them visually on a surface so as to have a clear idea of how to intervene. This is why we are using an excellent #startupecosystem representation model developed by Cukier & Kon (2018) and we ask you:🤔
What are the points of the ecosystem that should be intervened upon most in Italy?
