🇳🇴 Gratulerer med dagen! 🇳🇴 Today, #Norway celebrates its National Day, the 17th of May! It's a day filled with incredible joy, with children's parades, vibrant flags, and a true sense of national pride across the country. 🇳🇴 🇳🇴 🇳🇴 For me, 17th of May holds a special place in my heart. As someone who works with amazing Norwegian colleagues and spends a lot of time in Norway, I've come to truly appreciate this day. But it also holds a personal significance – two years ago today, I proposed to my partner in the beautiful city of Oslo! 17th of May is #grunnlovsdag when Norway celebrates the signing of the constitution in 1814. Recent controversies surrounding wind energy development in Sápmi highlight the need for ongoing dialogue and respect for Sámi rights in Norwegian laws in the context of #Green #Colonialism. In 2021, the Norwegian Supreme Court itself found that Norway was in violation of its #human #rights obligations under ICCPR Art. 27 and its own constitutional obligations (Art. 108) in the Fosen wind farms case. It took the Norwegian government more than two years and countless protests by dedicated activists to find a settlement, apologise, and move forward. #Grunnlovsdag can therefore also be a day to reflect on these developments and think about a better society for all. While celebrating Norway's rich culture and heritage is important, it's also crucial to acknowledge the complexities of its history. The concept of "Norwegianisation" and the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Sannhet og forsoning – grunnlag for et oppgjør med fornorskingspolitikk og urett mot samer, kvener/norskfinner og skogfinner), whose final report was published last year, are important conversations to have - both inside and outside Norway. A 40-year-old programme run from the Norwegian Embassy in Brazil has managed to do what the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom have failed to do: provide direct grants to #indigenous-run organisations. A new public database on funding for forest #tenurerights the “Path to Scale Dashboard,” reveals a huge discrepancy in donors’ provision of direct grants to indigenous organisations and national NGOs. Today, June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. It’s a day designated for all citizens of Canada to reflect on and honour the contributions and resiliency of Indigenous peoples. At the NWMO we are committed to Reconciliation, aligning Indigenous Knowledge with our work, and building sustainable relationships with Indigenous communities. One resource I want to share today is about #LandBack. This is not the most current resource (2021) and possibly not even the best one.
