On 22-23 September, world leaders will gather in New York for the much-anticipated #SummitoftheFuture. At a time when effective global cooperation is increasingly critical for our survival, achieving it remains a challenge fueled by mistrust and outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities. The Summit’s main outcome will be an inter-governmental agreement – the Pact for the Future – featuring two annexes: a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. World leaders adopt pivotal UN Pact for the Future 👏 "World leaders are at UN Headquarters in New York this Sunday where they adopted the potentially game-changing Pact for the Future by consensus, with a small group of just seven countries holding out, having failed to pass a last-minute amendment. UN x Pact for the Future

The 75th anniversary of the UN came at a time when the whole world was confronting the shared threats of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, the risks and opportunities of technological advances, and stagnation on the Sustainable Development Goals. In recognition of these trends and our unprecedented interconnectedness, Member States pledged to strengthen global governance and asked the Secretary-General for his recommendations to address current and future challenges (A/RES/75/1). The Secretary-General responded with Our Common Agenda, calling for solidarity between people, countries and generations, and a corresponding renewal of the multilateral system to accelerate implementation of existing commitments and fill gaps in global governance that have emerged since 2015. The report proposed a Summit of the Future as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to take these steps.

The UN Summit of the Future is a very important and timely summit which, amongst other issues, is trying to ensure that the UN system itself is “ fit for purpose” as humanity faces into a complex set of interrelated global challenges. Most intelligent people recognise that an unprecedented level of international cooperation will be required over the coming decades if we are to succeed in averting catastrophic climate change, address global migration, and promote peace, stability and human security around the world. It is importabt that UN Member Statez ( such as Ireland) invest the resources and give the necessary political attention to this UN Summit and to the processes associated with it. The Summit represents an oppprtunity for societies everywhere and for their political leaders more specifically, to act before it’s too late, and before the opportunity to create a more positive future for people and for planet is lost. Here’s hoping that humanity’s self- preservation instincts kick in (even at this late stage) and that the Summit of the Future can produce an overall political blueprint, and a set of agreements that will allow us all to create a better future for ourselves, and to avoid the potentially catastrophic global scenarios that will confront us otherwise…

The "Pact for the Future," adopted during the UN's Summit of the Future in September 2024, represents a critical effort to address the urgent global challenges of the 21st century. Key aspects of the pact are: -Strengthening Multilateralism - Commitment to the SDG - Focus on Future Generations - Global Digital Compact - Call for action UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the necessity of immediate and bold actions to bring multilateralism back on track, urging member states to implement these agreements with the aim of preventing further global deterioration.

🎂 Today marks the 79th anniversary of the United Nations Charter’s entry into force. The Charter calls for the United Nations to maintain international peace and security, promote social progress and better standards of life, strengthen international law and promote human rights —challenges no country can tackle alone. Since 1945, its influence has extended beyond diplomacy. In 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member States, offering a framework for actionable change through the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals (SDGs). By providing a shared language for addressing systemic issues, adaptable to local realities while tracking global impact, #SDG ’s are a powerful framework to ensure a just, equitable, and sustainable world where no one is left behind. Yet, as we look towards the SDGs 2030 milestone, we must confront the reality: setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic, climate disruptions, armed conflicts and deepening inequalities have setback many of the targets. The question is no longer whether we will reach the targets, but how - amid multiple global challenges - we can intensify our efforts, adapt strategies, and strengthen our collective innovative resolve in the years we have left to maintain a livable planet for all. 🌍 The Pact for the Future was recently adopted by Heads of State and Government at the United Nations, marking a significant milestone in global cooperation. This historic agreement, reached after extensive negotiations, outlines 56 commitments across key areas including sustainable development, international peace and security, technology, and global governance reform. The commitments focus on transformative actions such as eradicating poverty, closing the financing gap for the Sustainable Development Goals, accelerating climate action, and ensuring that no one is left behind. The Pact also aims to strengthen the multilateral system, making it more inclusive, effective, and representative of today’s world.
