Exciting conversation with Anna Alex, series founder and co-founder of Nala Earth!   Anna founds and invests in companies, writes on LinkedIn about the woolly mammoth that became extinct 52,000 years ago and its DNA, or about CBAM, the ‘Carbon Boarder Adjustment Mechanism’, reaching over 55,000 followers. 🚀🚀🚀   We met up in #Berlin-Mitte to discuss her current company and the idea behind Nala Earth. Nala Earth enables companies to proactively measure and manage their impacts and dependencies on nature and biodiversity using software.   NALA Earth's target group is primarily large companies that fall under the EU-wide Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD). Since the beginning of the year, companies with more than 500 employees have had to regularly report on their impact on nature and biodiversity in accordance with this directive. The company has already raised €1.7 million in an initial financing round.   Our task at E.ON Group Innovation is to identify challenges in our business areas, develop tools and solutions for them and then transfer them back to the business for scaling. We do this in close cooperation with research institutions and start-ups - another reason why the dialogue with founders is so important to me.   To ensure that the energy supply remains reliable in a new, complex energy world, we need not only a well-planned grid expansion, but also the digitalisation of the grids. Only the use of sensor technology, intelligent measurement and control technology, software and communication technologies will make it possible to monitor and safely manage decentralised power generation and consumption systems in real time. What we are doing in the energy sector, Nala Earth is trying to do in the management of natural services.   I discussed with Anna that we should examine the extent to which her company can enrich the start-up ecosystem of E.ON Group Innovation and where there are common areas of interest. 🌱 Desert algae production or 🌌 renewable energy in space—these were just a few of the innovations which amazed me at the GREENTECH FESTIVAL in Berlin last week! Over two packed days, researchers, industry giants, and start-ups showcased the potential of green technologies.   However, as Sandrine Dixson-Declève noted, technology alone won't drive the systemic change needed for planetary and societal well-being. This tech removes CO₂ directly from seawater, returning CO₂-free water to the ocean, enhancing the ocean's natural ability to absorb atmospheric carbon. With the support of DOEN Participaties B.V., Future Tech Ventures, CarbonFix, and angel investors, SeaO2 is set to launch a pilot in 2025 with a 250-ton annual CO₂ removal target. The ambitious startup aims for megaton-scale removal by 2030 and a gigaton by 2045. Through collaborations with XPRIZE, TU Delft, and Wetsus, European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology, SeaO2 is emerging as a key player in sustainable ocean technology. This funding boost will also help SeaO2 grow its team and refine its Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems to ensure impactful carbon removal.
