Detroit had so much to teach us during the High Line Network's 2024 symposium this fall, and we're eager to share everything we learned with cities across the country and the world. The High Line's executive director, Alan van Capelle, and High Line Network member Scott Kratz, director of the 11th Street Bridge Park, recently shared their reflections on the three-day event in a recent op-ed in Crain's Detroit Business. Their major takeaways included insights from Detroit into: 🫂 Involving communities in public placemaking 📜 Incorporating local history in industrial reuse projects 💡 Understanding use-based inclusivity 🎧 Leading by listening To read more about the best practices for public space development that we saw exhibited all across Detroit, check out Alan and Scott's full op-ed in Crain's Detroit today! 📰 https://lnkd.in/eVjsnR7s And thank you once again to our incredible host partners - the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership (JLGP) - for welcoming our High Line Network members and introducing us to a city shimmering with energy and innovation. 📷: Nadir Ali

Urban Planning Professional | Human Scale Urban Design | Advancing the redesign of cities to promote environmental & economic sustainability
Touring the Joe Louis Greenway in Detroit at the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals (APBP) conference last week. This project is a master class in creating an authentic, reciprocal relationship with community that's based in mutual respect. When community needs are centered on a project like this, there's a tangible sense of care when walking the trail. Kudos to Christina Peltier and everyone at the City of Detroit and SmithGroup who made this a reality, including colleagues from Toole Design Group :). And thank you for organizing a wonderful tour, Christina! It was an honor to meet Miss Williams, Miss Pickens, and Mr Rio and witness their testimony about how much this greenway means to them. Can't wait to visit Detroit again.

In December 2023, I was invited by Courtney Christensen from Kansas City Public Library to give a keynote to open their 150th anniversary celebrations. In January I learned that ART IN THE LOOP FOUNDATION, the public art program for #KansasCity run by Downtown Council of Kansas City, had been so inspired by the talk that they had chosen #convivencia as the theme for their public art summer with KC STREETCAR AUTHORITY. This is the impact that I hoped to see from my research. In my latest newsletter, Ann Holliday and Edwing Mendez talk about how the capability of #coexistence transformed into more than 20 performances and installations. I find this story of Kansas City so inspiring. The big takeaways from it are: 1. There is no greater tool for communicating values than #publicart. 2. Public authorities have power and should use their power on how public spaces are used as a platform for the arts. 3. The biggest investments in the arts are not done by growing the cultural budget but incorporating the arts into public infrastructure. 4. Even when working on serious subjects, like downturn revitalization, do not forget play and wonder. Read the entire article here: https://lnkd.in/e6P3Y-wc

For all the budding entrepreneurs, this can be a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of innovation and entrepreneurship in the heart of Silicon Valley (Stanford's d.school). I was a participant of this program in 2019 (then, it was called the Silicon Valley Innovation Academy). And during this program, I decided to shut down my last startup, that I had been working on for more than a year. Multiple startup events, competitions (several of which we won), and accelerator programs couldn't teach me what I learnt here in 10 weeks. Things like, what really matters in a founding team, frameworks of innovation thinking and exposure to what is already possible in the world. On top of it, I have also gained some great friends, across different cultures, through this program. Apply for this program and feel free to connect with me if you have any questions. #innovation #entrepreneurship #technology #startup
Tamara Carleton, Ph.D. are we ready to share this summer's big event with the world? #Stanford #StanfordMoonshots

I'm looking forward to participating in this panel discussion in May! As a young professional who was empowered by experienced mentors who treated me as a valued peer, I am so appreciative of vision-focused leadership where the opportunity to learn from people with different perspectives, no matter what age or background, is embraced. Smart leaders live with a growth mindset and know there is always more to be learned.
✨ We're thrilled to announce our partnership with Surry County Economic Development Partnership and the Foothills Young Professionals for this fantastic event! Looking forward to collaborating and making it a success. RSVP HERE: https://lnkd.in/gCgf9i6k
