Read about one of our previous projects where environmental performance is a result of ecology being integrated with the building design. This was and is still an unique project which the team is extremely proud of for its Low-Tech Systems and High-Impact Performance. #engineering #construction #architecture #landscape #ecology #buildingphysics #buildingscience
A Biomaterial-Based Roof Insulation That Keeps On Growing The Sisonke District Office in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, is a flagship example of how building design can integrate environmental performance. Its green roof is more than just insulation; it is a living, growing ecosystem with over 100 species of endemic plants. This roof helps regulate temperature year-round, cooling the building in summer through soil evaporation and insulating it during winter. This project, carried out with Steve Kinsler Architects, also maximizes natural ventilation, daylight, and underfloor heating. These passive design elements support the building's performance without active cooling or ventilation systems, allowing it to stand out as a model of affordable, low-energy architecture. House G / October 2022 . Inside a building, the combination of thermal mass and insulation plays a crucial role in maintaining comfort and energy efficiency. While insulation like strawbale helps prevent heat transfer, clay plaster provides thermal mass by absorbing and releasing heat. Unlike insulation alone, thermal mass stabilizes indoor temperatures, reducing reliance on heating and cooling systems. Together, they create a balanced environment, making homes more sustainable and comfortable year-round. . #lehmbau #lehmputz #clayplaster #clayplastering #lehm #architecture #underconstruction #project #strawbale #strawbalehouse #strawbalearchitecture #sonnenklee #fachwerk #fachwerkhaus #timberframe #timberframehouse #timberconstruction #gesundbauen #bauenmitlehm #naturalbuilding #sustainableliving #sustainability #raumklima #natürlichleben #ökologischbauen #klimaneutral #teamlehm #lowcarbon #circularconstruction #earthfriendly

What does sustainable architecture look like? 🌿 Sustainable architecture includes basic elements such as energy efficiency and water usage externally and internally, eco-friendly materials, and improving air quality. Using clever strategies for sustainable architecture will support these elements and in turn, support your home’s sustainability efforts. Of these basic elements, you can use natural light, thermal mass, insulation, recycled materials, green roofs, greywater systems, solar panels and more to improve a building’s sustainability output. Natural lighting allows homeowners to use natural light sources to increase the thermal envelope and energy efficiency. Thermal mass takes advantage of the sun’s heat by using materials such as concrete or stone to absorb the warmth during the day and slowly release it at night. - Scenarioarchitecture.com #sustainablearchitecture #greendesign #sustainability

Do industrial buildings need to be unattractive and incompatible with urban living? We at Arup challenge this with an innovative approach and say no! Take a look at the WorkStack industrial building, the UK's first light industrial building of its type and scale, constructed from mass timber. Do you want to embark an Industrial project that don't conform with the norms? #Arup is your best choice. #WeAreArup #Architecture

Not your regular elephant in the room - Jeff Ker, from Engineered Assemblies, will look at rainscreens retrofits, at our Chicago Conference in November: Rainscreens are a proven and effective solution for façade and envelope design, providing benefits in virtually any climate. In fact, in many environments, high-performance rainscreens are essential for sustainable building practices. Yet, for decades, many designs have overlooked this passive technology, resulting in buildings that struggle with moisture management. This has led to inadequate performance, structural concerns, and serious health risks for occupants, such as mold and moisture-related issues. In some cases, a rainscreen retrofit can dramatically improve a building’s performance and extend its lifespan. But is a rainscreen retrofit always the right solution? Let’s explore where it makes sense and how to make informed decisions for your building’s future.
