As we approach the summer and a time of the ‘Long Stay’, many of you may turn your attention to assessing your jobs & careers. Allow me to recommend you consider adding an extra dimension to your professional life, such as getting involved with committees and exploring NED roles. Both great ways to add deeper meaning to your work, re-engage with your sector, and for some fall back in love with your profession. Over the years I’ve had the privilege to serve on several committees & chair a handful of boards. It’s such a great way to give-back, share expertise, develop as an individual, and support the development of others. Tangibly it delivers meaningful outcomes for all. Yes, it’s a commitment as it means carving out time (our most precious resource), and so it’s vital to select the initiatives to support carefully. 3 Key Questions to ask yourself: ✅ Does it fit with your interests and passion ✅ Do you have relevant insights, experience, expertise to offer ✅ Can you consistently show up, contribute and deliver If you can answer yes to all, go for it! You never know what opportunities you’ll be making available to others from your efforts, and opportunities that may come to you from it too. Win win, if you need that as encouragement. When committees collaborate it’s a magical thing. I’m always blown away when I get to hear about the initiatives committee members contribute to or lead, and the outcomes we’re part of delivering. We truly turn #insightsintoaction. 🎯 The opportunity to bring your insights, expertise and experience to a new environment, to collaborate and cocreate building activity to support others, and drive progress and positive outcomes is energising. I find it highly rewarding, satisfying and fulfilling. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to broaden my own thinking through increasing my network by meeting people outside of my immediate circle. 🌟 I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue my learning whilst deepening connections and making new friends. 🙌 A shout out to the excellent Institute of Directors (IoD) development courses that have supported me in both preparing for and serving out my extra-curricular committee and chair roles.
