🇨🇦Canada’s potential to be a great power. I recently had the pleasure of listening to the recording of Mark Carney’s keynote address from the 2024 Canada 2020’s Economic Lookahead Dinner in Toronto. I have listened to many of his speeches, but I found this to be the most inspiring one to date…. Right from his heart. I thought of sharing some of the highlights of the speech (given in “ “), mixed in with my own opinion. We are living in the age of disinformation and misinformation, and we get polarized over even the most inconsequential of things. We hide behind our social media handles and spread hatred and toxicity that can rip apart the fabric of our society and destroy what binds us together as Canadians and as global citizens. Mark talks about the risks of subscribing to the doctrine of “broken democracy and the need to take back control”. He draws parallelism to #Brexit where, what Brexiters promised/believed and what the Brits actually ended up with. I wonder what would be the outcome if there were to be another referendum today on whether Britain should consider rejoining the #EU or not. 🤔 Our democracy is fragile by design, but it is not broken. The fact that people could get away with disrespecting , ridiculing and even mildly threatening our Prime Minister and other elected officials (as we have witnessed in recent years) without any fear of prosecution, imprisonment or extrajudicial actions is a testament to the fact that our democracy is intact and functioning. Our political affiliations aside, we really need to be mindful of who we are voting for and what they stand for because it can really make a difference between policies leading to growth in Canadian values and interests, benefiting many or decline in Canadian values and interests benefiting a few. “We need politics that unites Canadians.” The highlights from his keynote related to environment: “Being low carbon now is a fundamental driver of competitiveness and it is a dynamic that is being reinforced by the AI revolution.” “We need to build our core competencies from clean energy to computing.” “In the 21st century, great powers will the green powers, and Canada must be and will be a great power.” Listen to the full keynote and the discussion that followed: https://lnkd.in/gdGC_R_D Thank you Mark for a great keynote and for the constant reminder that we need to focus on getting our priorities straight and act upon them. #greeneconomy #decarbonization #climateaction #climatechange #netzero #Canadianpolitics #vote #freedom
