An EY employee tragically died due to work stress, and I want to share some thoughts. It's not always upper management that creates a toxic environment; often, it’s the micromanagement from insecure individuals that contributes to this atmosphere. In many cases, management is unaware of what’s happening at the lower levels of the organization. Before questioning EY as a whole, consider examining your own insecurities that may drive you to behave this way.

There should be an inquiry and heads should roll in EY leadership for a deep introspection into the culture of EY and same in other Big 4s. None of them are any different. After working for 8 years in Big 4, it's disheartening and somewhat unsurprising to know that tomorrow will likely be just another day with no acknowledgment of what happened. Sadly, the cycle may continue as EY may have already replaced the individual with someone who will eventually face similar challenges. The absence of EY employees at the deceased funeral and the manager's lack of response may not be surprising. Goes to show the nasty toxic culture that has been inculcated over the years. Ultimately, the departed soul might find more peace without their presence. No company or manager is worth sacrificing one's life for; one death is already one too many. To my Big 4 friends, prioritizing work-life balance and personal well-being is crucial. Remember, taking care of your health by eating well and getting enough rest should always come before any work-related demands. Your health and well-being should never be compromised for any client or managerial requests. Please feel free to talk to me if any of you want to talk about it. Incidents like these have a profound impact on Human Psyche and having a conversation is essential. #EY #Big4 #EmployeeWellness #RIPAnna

Having said this, I also believe a lot of personal blame needs to be taken on the girls part and her family's part. Nobody dies out of the blue because of terrible work environment and stress, it's a slow gradual process. Constant neglect of one's personal health and well-being and pushing through your mental and physical limits are NOT essential to work in a Big 4. Learn to say No! Learn to recognize when enough is enough It's a very important skill in life. The extra 5% bonus or hike is not worth your life. #EmployeeWellness #EY #WorkLifeBalance

Reflections on Starting My First Job: 1️⃣ Always feel comfortable asking for help or clarification. Ensure you've made an effort to solve the issue and have an initial suggestion before reaching out. 2️⃣ Avoid committing to unrealistic deadlines. Highlight potential risks and delays early if you notice timelines slipping. 3️⃣ Be proactive in setting expectations and boundaries when needed. Take the initiative beyond your role and give yourself the freedom to experiment. 4️⃣ Never prioritize your job over your mental and physical health. Strive to create a happier and healthier work environment for yourself and your team. 5️⃣ Maintain confidence during setbacks and unexpected challenges. Seek out and develop relationships with mentors who can guide you towards your best self. 6️⃣ Understand that working more hours doesn't necessarily lead to better performance. Learn from senior and top performers on how to work more efficiently. 7️⃣ Recognize the value of to-do lists. Ensure your prioritization logic is clear within your task lists. #accountant #pwc #ey #kpmg #deloitte #auditor

In light of recent events, it's important to avoid generalizations or unfair criticisms of EY as a whole. The firm has significantly contributed to my career development, and it holds a special place in my heart among all my employers. We should not let isolated incidents overshadow the valuable opportunities EY continues to provide. I am truly saddened by the loss of our colleague, but it’s essential to recognize that the decision to work long hours often reflects individual preference and passion. Just as doctors dedicate themselves to saving lives, many professionals, including CAs, commit to their work to enhance the financial health of their organizations. I feel fortunate to have begun my consulting career at EY, and I sincerely appreciate the experiences and opportunities the firm has offered me. Some of the standout qualities of working at Ernst & Young include: - Time off is valued at EY, and my partner and counselor consistently support both planned and sick leaves. - While late hours may occasionally be necessary, EY prioritizes employee well-being alongside client satisfaction. In my 1.5 years with the firm, I’ve appreciated its strong emphasis on work-life balance. - The empathy and approachability of senior leadership. Despite their positions, they remain accessible and supportive, fostering a culture with minimal hierarchical barriers—something rare in many organizations. - I have witnessed EY’s genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion firsthand. My journey at EY has been filled with challenges and growth. Reflecting on my team and the support I've received fills me with gratitude. Let’s not allow a few incidents to overshadow the impactful work that #EY and the broader #big4 do every day to empower individuals and drive the industry forward. P.S. This is my experience and perspective, and I fully respect differing opinions on the matter. #Proud #EY

The outrage over the death of a 26-year-old EY employee is heart wrenching but what's even more critical now is how we respond to situations like this in our own environments. A post may express your frustration, but it's our actions that can truly prevent another tragedy like this. Here are some ways we can contribute as Leaders: 1. Define Boundaries: Business continuity is important, but as leaders and managers, we must set clear limits. Work should never consume someone's life to the point of harm. 2. Reject Toxic Work Norms: Avoid glorifying unnecessary late-night work, continuing to work when ill, or expecting people to work on weekends, holidays, or while on leave. These behaviors should never be celebrated or supported. 3. Be Empathetic: When team members come to you with problems, listen with empathy. They see you as a sound board, not as inspector looking to find faults in their stars. 4. Address the wrong: If you notice someone handling a situation poorly, be upfront about it. Remind them that being human and compassionate comes above all else. 5. Be a Buffer, Not a Channel: If directives from higher-ups are out of your control and don’t align with your values, absorb the pressure without letting it trickle down to your team. Remember "Culture" is what we allow to grow. If you see something harmful, don’t let it grow. It’s on us to shape a work environment that protects and values and life of each person.

Really?? It's hard to believe that a person's passing can be attributed to just one cause. The tragic death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old EY employee, has sparked widespread outrage, especially after her mother's emotional letter went viral, pointing to alleged work pressure. While this has raised concerns, I believe the situation is far more complex. Honest, every job comes with its own set of challenges, and no role is free from stress. Just as everything in life has pros and cons, it's unfair to place the blame entirely on a company as large and reputed as EY. With thousands of employees, it's crucial to consider that there may be deeper, hidden factors behind such tragedies that haven't yet come to light. Before jumping to conclusions, let's seek a more holistic understanding. While work culture and pressure are real issues, we must also ask whether other factors might have played a part. It's time to approach this with empathy and open minds to uncover the full truth. RIP #anna #ey #workpressure #mentalhealth #employeewellbeing #corporateresponsibility #work

I had an incredible opportunity to sit down for lunch with Mr. Abhishek Sabu, Partner at EY in Risk Consulting domain. I asked him, "Life can feel unfair sometimes, you know? Some people have a head start with family background, resources, connections. Naturally, they're ahead of us. How do we tackle this?" He replied, "I get it, Milind. Many people may have had a head start and might seem ahead in the game. But that doesn’t mean the game is over. The game is still on." Hearing that gave me a renewed sense of hope and motivation. Here are some other questions I asked: 1. What led you to choose Risk Consulting, and why did you decide on EY? 2. How have your 15+ years at EY been? 3. What advice would you give to your younger self or to us? 4. With so many roles and domains out there, it’s hard to know which is right without actually diving in and spending time in each. How should I go about finding the best fit for me? I’ll share more insights from this conversation in my next post.

Was McKinsey the culprit? Is EY really a culprit? Tomorrow it may be KPMG/Pwc/Deloitte Is it about long working hours? Sometimes it’s not about long working hours but people around you. If they keeps on praising you, 🥇 keeps you motivated, make you feel good - you even enjoy working hard (or I should say really hard) I have seen many of my friends, working only 6-7 hours 🕐 a day but still cribbing about office politics and got depressed. What missing was empathy and that is any newcomer expect to absorb into any organisation. Just want to share an advice 💭 for my juniors.. Do what you like but your friend or siblings.. You might be driving Honda and not Mercedes 🚙… but you would be content in your life.. Don’t settle for less, keep pushing but please don’t be ignorant of your boundaries 🙅 Lesson i have learnt from the incident is Be Empathetic … Be Kind🤗 #linkedin #big4 #ey #kpmg #pwc #deloitte #ca #charteredaccountant #cafinal
